I have been trying to sell this, no takers. ANACS no problem AU55, it is not an inexpensive coin. It has a very thick skin as shown. I was considering cracking it out of the ANACS holder, dipping it judiciously, and sending it in to PCGS. Thoughts? Think it would dip out nice? Think it would grade? *** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***Edited by Jon K 11/19/2013 2:32 pm

No. Never dip an AU coin. Even if you get it right, the resulting luster isn't appropriate for a circulated coin. And you probably won't get it right; it affects circulated coins differently than Mint State ones.

Dang Dave, I hadn't even hit the "send" button yet . . . . . Indeed I have no experience with circulated coins, but thought that high AU was still OK to dip. Hmmmmm, you have never steered me wrong. I can see a nice coin under that skin . . . .

Seriously, though, I don't think this one's a candidate. It's rarely my desire to discuss the hows/whens of dipping on the forum, but this is a good time to make an exception. Too much of the color I see is surface wear as opposed to toning, and it's very likely that a dip would create too much contrast between luster remaining in nooks and crannies and the larger areas of the fields - the result would be obvious. A "righteous" AU candidate would retain the majority of original mint luster. Either way, I'm loathe to advise this course for any AU coin; it's too iffy. Especially this one, as it's a pretty pricey coin in AU. Let it be.

I'd leave it :-)
Acetone probably wouldn't hurt.

Leave it alone. If you do not like it, sell it; lower the price if you must.
Someone will appreciate it. Maybe that market is small. Dip this coin and that market will shrink even more.

Okay okay!! I will leave it alone!! Edit, nevermind, I was about to post something that might be construed as an attempt to sell this coin. Dave, if you saw this post before editing, I meant what I said! Thank you for helping me with the photos a couple years ago. The camera really loves this coin! Jon

" ANACS no problem ..." Why create [most likely] a problematic coin out of it? DO NOT DIP!

This one I am waffling on, but leaning towards no.
Having said that, I dont know that that is circulation color or toning. But it may well make it obvious that you dipped it. But there seems to be good luster under the toning.
Si if I am debating with myself this much, no is definitely the safe way to go here. LOL
And yeah, that one is NOT a cheap coin. Dropping the price only ten bucks or so could do the trick.

I agree with Dave, this coin looks great just the way it is.

Quote: What is dipping?
The term "dipping" typically refers to the use of a commercial coin cleaner such as Jeweluster or E-Z-Est, a silver coin would be dipped in a solution of thiourea and sulfuric acid to remove toning.
