Hello! Haven't been very active on the forums for the last few months however hopefully should get back to the swing of things in the next week or so.
I was staying down in Rye(Sussex) and had to have a browse of the Antique shops. Everything was waaaaaay over priced for my liking other than this Cartwheel. The lady had it up for £40 but I managed to knock her down to £35 .
As far as price paid and grade are concerned, how well would you rate this?

Very nice for the money - I await more qualified opinion on grade. Is the edge the same all around as per your pic or are there some knocks ?

Nice buy! It looks like there's some wear but not much... AU-58. AU-55 would be the least.

Rooneydog; the edge is the same all the way round. I like the almost tortoiseshell effect toning the coin has. This one is definitely a keeper
Also, I read in Spink that there is a 10 leaf and 11 leaf wreath version. Am I correct in saying its the 10 leaf version?

Coinage, if the edge truly is that good all round then you have done really well, GEF (British grading system) for me, nice one!

It is the 10 leaf variety. The extra leaf where present is found behind the bottom leaf at the back of the head. An easier way to tell is to look at the end of the tie ribbon. The 10 leaf points down at the end whilst the 11 points out horizontally.

Ideally you should get a copy of Peck where the above info is listed along with about 700 pages of additional material. Although out of print since 1970, it has never been revamped or superseded as there is not a lot to add. It is the only volume covering English base metal coinage from Elizabeth I through to Elizabeth II. At a typical price of £100-130 in decent used condition, it is still good value for money and a 'should buy' item. Get the second edition (1964) or the lithographic reprint (1970). Peck also wrote a small adddendum in the 1967 BNJ.
