Hey Guys!

These 2 coins were my Great Great Grandmothers. My grandmother is in need of money and wants to sell them. She Almost took them to a local coin dealer to sell them!!!!

Little does she know I'm just going to buy them myself. I could not in good concise let these out of my sight. What are your opinions on grade and price for these 2? Is it worth it to have the Liberty Head slabbed?

1853 Liberty Head Gold Dollar
1871 Large Head, Value and CAL in Wreath 1/4 Dollar Round

Sorry I have no references on the cal fractional gold coins ,, I agree with you though that they should remain in the family treasure chest !!

What's up with that?

For Gold coins there're places in the Uk for instance where you get about 90% of it's expected retail value..

The problem here is that you can't always trust a local coin dealer. They might take advantage of you. And if an 80 year old woman walked into a shop and asked how much a gold coin would sell for I know they would only give her less then melt value.

I have looked through what little I have on the fractional coins ,, the 1853 notes many copies ,, and the 1871 is suspect by the date ,, many of these coins were made as souveniers and jewelry pieces,, If I were in your shoes authentication would be the first thing I would do .

If there is a dealer you can trust in your area try that just make it clearthat the coins are not forsale ,If not then perhaps a trip to Anacs would be in order.

I was thinkin ANACS because there are some light brush marks under magnification. If it IS cleaned I don't want it bagged.

I am about 95% sure that these are authentic however mainly because they weren't picked up at a store 50-60 years ago. They have been passed down from almost the day they were minted.

If I go the ANACS road I'm gonna need some advice and help eventually because it's a whole new territory for me. Luckily a while back I got their starter pack with order forms and such but haven't done anything with them yet.

I would give Grandma whatever she needed and just hang on to them regardless of their authenticity. The 1871 fractional looks legit IMO,judging from dentil pattern and strike. The 1853 would probably holder @ XF-AU with any of the TPGs. I like dirty gold!
