It is an awesome coin to gaze at, that's for sure. I read the story as well behind it and it lends to the fact that it is a real numismatic rarity. The price tag, while understandably is the seller's viewpoint of perceived value, I believe is a tad but too much. Now in follow up to my very bold and almost unfounded statement of price, I will say beauty is always in the eye of the beholder. If I were that financially secure, I would offer a cool quarter million and leave it at that.

I also noticed that the seller owns the IHC struck on the $2.5 Gold Planchet that he purchased back in 1975 for $7,750 and "values" that coin at $150K for resale today. With inflation, $7750 in '75 is about 3x to 4x today's dollars and I'm not sure that numismatic rarity adds an additional 600%. Then again, I am in pure speculation mode trying to prod healthy debate with my comments. What say you fellow members?

The only known pre-1900 Branch Mint Proof/Specimen strikes (near as I can tell, only 5 are known) with recorded sales prices are all (3 known) over $1 Million.

Ya ya ya...I have way too much time on my hands...just fyi... if the coin was valued at $7750 in 1975... based on actual year over year average inflation... the coin would have a value of $36,086.

Don't forget the 8.1% sales tax; although he's willing to work out terms with 25% down!

Amazing ... should bring a fair price on an Heritage/Stacks auction ... alas not the Bay.

Thanks for sharing it with us.
