Picked up this pair at one of my local spots, saw the higher detail one first but decided to check out all the 1817's on a whim. Came home with two.

The first one would get a details grade, environmental damage. It's also a late die state as the stars mush out to the rim. The planchet is pretty thick in hand, rims are sharp. Details look high VF maybe XF. At the price I paid ($45) and with this kind of detail, I grabbed it for my type set. The corrosion is minor, but more obvious on the reverse.

Now on to the bonus coin! I couldn't believe this was in the stack with all the other 1817's. I put it aside first. The reverse is nice, the obverse has some red patina/discoloration. This one might go details as well, but it looks F12 to me. I can't get over it being unidentified by a dealer and priced at $20.

You have the two most interesting 1817 varieties. The "mouse" and the inexplicable 15 star!! nice picks!

For some reason, many coin dealers don't invest time in their copper. The silver is out on display, but the copper is tucked away in boxes behind the counter. Not that it bothers me. I can then dig through and find all the good stuff.

Can't believe I didn't notice the mouse until amida mentioned it.

With my curiosity now peaked with respect to the N-7 or N-7.5, what exactly did I find? Was $45 a good deal? I bought it because the price was for a VG/F coin but it had VF details. The book says its an R3, but that doesn't seem all that rare to warrant the prices I saw on some completed auctions at heritage ($1000+ for an XF details example?). I checked completed ebay auctions, saw an XF details sell for $100. That's a massive discrepancy in price for two coins with similar environmental issues. What would the copper experts here expect this coin to truly sell for to a copper collector? I just want to know what to do with it (leave it in my type set, move it to my large cent dansco, or flip it for some more copper to fill some empties in my large cent set).

Nice coins! I love the "mouse on top" variety.
