My father has acquired and sold a bunch of really neat printing plates over the last year. I've had intentions of photographing and sharing them with CCF members but just haven't had the time. Many have sold to reputable dealers and collectors throughout Canada, so sadly I won't be able to offer much documentation on those particular pieces. The majority of the plates are for printing cheques from private branches of many different Canadian chartered banks, some very rare. The plates are copper, hand engraved, and each one is customized for a particular branch. At the Coin Expo this year the Currency Museum purchased two for their own collection, I'm pleased to see they have blogged about them on their homepage. One of them for the Imperial Bank of Canada, in Rat Portage, Ontario(1890's). And, the other for a private bank in southern Ontario which I can't find much info on. Please see the link below, http://www.currencymuseum.ca/catego...museum-blog/So, I will try to post some pictures of some plates we've recently acquired. We think one could be a sales sample for the Molsons Bank because it's engraved 'right side up' so the cheque would be printed backwards.....and other reasons I'll share later. Thanks for looking, I'll post more this evening once I figure out how to photograph these things.

Wow, I guess this topic won't get any love without more/better pictures. Hopefully this will get some of the chartered collectors interested. Here's The Molsons Bank test plate I mentioned, it might be difficult to see but listed are multiple branch locations in cities across Ontario and Quebec. Also, notice this plate is bilingual. The copper plate itself reads forward, and the print produced would be backwards as seen in the photos.

Next up, a cheque plate. The date is engraved 190_ and the single digit would be written manually. (1900-1909) The Home Bank, Queen St West Branch, Toronto, Ontario!

Those are so cool! Would they get devalued if you used a plate to make a fantasy piece? It would, right?
How much are you selling these for? This is like having all three dies.

Thanks everyone, I'll post some more later. Quote: Those are so cool! Would they get devalued if you used a plate to make a fantasy piece? It would, right? Believe it our not, we found matching original cheques for one plate. That was real neat, but sold of course. There are lots of cheque books out there in dealers/collectors hands and that sort of stuff can be found. In order to abide by CCF rules, I'll just say they start at a couple hundred dollars and go up from there, depending on the piece.

@ Chequer - thanks, the Molson's Bank plate is now in my collection, and the Home Bank remains with my father. He is expecting to acquire a Home Bank banknote from a particular client one day(maybe never) which will go nicely with the plate. The whole collection was 30+ pieces and we've pretty much sold them all. Most ended up in the hands of dealers so I suspect some will come to market over the next few years.

As I suspected, some of these plates are coming to auction in The Canadian Legacy Sale hosted by Canadian Coin & Currency. It seems Bromberg has put a value on these much higher than we expected, it will be interesting to see if they sell at these prices. http://auctions.cdncoin.com/The-Can...Sale_as32535

It'll be interesting to see if there's any interest at those prices. Thanks for the link.
