Ok, I have a problem with Toned Morgans. They are super addicting, and I may have to seek out Toned Morgans Anonymous if I can not stop the hunger! I have been focusing on getting better at grading with the purchasing of slabbed Morgans, but I did come across a few Toners that I could not pass up. First is this 1896 Morgan. What do you all think? What grade would you put it as? What are things to look out for on toned Morgans that affect value, either positively or negatively? Also took Fade's advice and tried to shoot straight on in sunlight. Looking forward to hearing from the forum...

Just let me say, the images are a MASSIVE improvement!

With that said... this kind of toning is meh at best. At worst, the darker areas in front of Libertys head could be considered damage due to the toning being too far advanced. That would be referred to as terminal toning. The fingerprint is distracting and something that will cause some to pass on it. Less demand, lower price.

With toning, you want to be able to cartwheel the coin and see luster underneath. The strongest premiums come from coins that exhibit rainbow colors. Here's a few images of coins I own that I consider attractively toned that would draw a nice premium if I sold them;

This coin is off being graded by PCGS right now; While it won't draw a HUGE premium, it is still nice enough to probably get about 25% premium over grade.

Here's by far the nicest toner I own, Already graded PCGS 65. I consider this coin to probably be worth about 2x guide.

Now the kind of coins that go for moon money;

It's all about colors. Blues, purples, greens, pinks... those are the big money colors. This link should give you some idea as to how toning works and how hard it is to find certain colors, and why;

I'm glad you think the pics are improving Fade, thanks. Meh at best is a pretty good way to put it! But I got this coin at a fair price, and I think even though it is dull and colorless on the obverse, it still has pretty good luster and won't be losing any money.
Your top toner is super colorful, that is nice! Did you buy that raw or already slabbed? And the one you currently are sending has some of those real nice pastel type colors. Thanks for clarifying what the market dictates in terms of value. I see why the purples, greens, blues, and reds really get the money. I think you linked that site in another forum, but I don't remember reading about the letter system for the obv/rev. Pretty good idea to rate and describe toning.
Even with the fingerprint and advanced toning, do you think this has a chance at a MS grade that isn't details? I think it could go for a 63, but like you said, it has that excitement of meh when it comes to the color chart.

Depends on the toning. Decent shot, I mean, it's a clean coin. But due to impaired luster, I couldn't see it higher than 62. I'd have to see it in hand to tell ya... if the black toned areas look like a fine ash (for... lack of a better way of describing it) covering the coin with no light reflecting through, then it would probably go details. If some luster still comes through the black, you'd be fine.
Rest in Peace

I agree with FTB.
It's ok, well really a must in my opinion, for everyone who collects Morgans and specifically toners to have one or two examples in this terminal state of toning. I would not fill my collection with any more than that, though. This should serve as a reminder of how delicate toning is and where all toned coins could end up if not properly encapsulated and stored.
