Ok, here is another coin I picked up. Now with this one, I purchased raw and in hand varies from the pictures here and the ones I saw online. While the obverse has some light toning, the reverse is really where all the toning is happening. And, actually I am not sure it is genuine toning. Thats where I was hoping to get some opinions in the forum.
From what I gather, toning is a naturally occurring reaction of the metals of the coin with air, dirt, moisture, age, etc... while things such as heat and cleaning/chemical treatment can cause toning that is considered "artificial". So, this coin looks like it either got hot on the reverse, or it sat face down on a shelf in a place where it just has toned to a black like color with a little natural luster/yellowing coming from the middle area. Like its just been in the natural elements for a while. Kind of hard for me to tell exactly being a novice. The reason I am not sure it was heat is because the obverse doesn't show any signs of discoloration from heat at all. So it just leads me to believe it may have been sitting face down in someones workshop on a shelf near the ocean, or something. Would love to hear some insight....

The obverse looks 63ish. I agree that the reverse has issues... the lack of luster indicates it was more than likely just subjected to the environment that caused the toning for too long. I don't think it's a result of heat exposure, though.

MS details.

Yeh, definitely over exposure to environment is my guess. It's a lot darker in person, glad you agree Fade. I got bid up the last seconds of this auction, but I think I can break even if I ever need to sell this still. I'm good with MS details if everyone else thinks so....

Just looks like a plain old 62/63 grade to me. I don't see any issues with the reverse toning.

Note cartwheel luster present on obverse, yet not on reverse, that's the red flag that makes me think it would bag.

You can also see the camera automatically lightened up the image considerably compared to the first picture. Another red flag that shows it's probably much darker in-hand.
