I was wondering what you more experienced collectors thought of these coins. It's the 2014 Tokelau Lunar Year of the Horse 1 Troy oz. 999 Fine Silver $5 Coin. They are limited to 50,000 and I think are sold exclusively by ModernCoinMart. They are Reverse Proof and come with a nice little COA stating all the particulars. I bought one on ebay for around $30 and it looks like they could be had for a little less right now. It shows a mare and fold and the reverse Queen Elizabeth. I was curious if the fact that they are sold exclusively by MCM a deterrent to collectability. I was thinking about picking up a few more as this is a pretty low mintage. Thanks.

Since no "more experienced collectors" have shown up here yet, I'll give it a try...

$30 for a reverse proof in capsule and with COA isn't a high price. That's only about $6 more than a bullion ASE. On that basis, it doesn't sound like the worst buy that ever was.

In terms of low mintage and collectibility... New Zealand Mint and other private mints put out a very large number of low mintage coins every year for Cook Islands, Tokelau,
Tuvalu, Palau, Niue and all the rest of those microdot-size South Pacific "coin islands." Don't expect the value of this one take to off like a moon rocket, but if you like the
design you won't badly injure yourself by buying this coin.

If you're interested in lunar coins, the Perth Mint Lunar Series II is one of the foremost lunar series in today's market. You'll have far better liquidity (if you ever choose to sell)
with PM Lunar II coins than I think you'll have with Tuvalu lunar coins. There are also lots of other lunar coins put out by many different national and private mints.

Good luck with whatever move you choose to make.

Thanks Freddy. I did get a 2014 Australian Perth Year of the Horse as well. It was a few dollars more. I guess from what you are saying is even though the mintage of the Perth is 300,000 as opposed to 50,000 for the Tokelau, the Perth Mint has more of a following and is maybe more collectible? The good thing is that I like the look of both.

In general agree with Freddy, as I decided to skip the whole TOkelau series as I didn't like year of snake at all. Got lots of australian horses instead as horse is one of the most popular lunars so they will rise in value for sure ... In December gonna get couple of UK year of the horse coins as well

Jeff---From what I've seen here and mostly elsewhere, the Perth Lunar Series II has a much bigger following and is way more popular. Go to the APMEX website
and look at the prices of the different years of the Perth Lunar Series (both I and II). You'll see the way those coins hold value & with luck appreciate.

I wouldn't see this as a $$-making scheme, but I think a lot of players do buy tubes of these things and later flip them on ebay. Just a personal feeling, but...
I think that's more of an activity thing than it is a generator of significant income. On top of that--the fees, hassles, bad dogs who'll complain they never got
the coin you sent them and all the rest of that misery--it all looks to me like more grief than I want in my life. But--traevin is right that the LCS will treat these
as generic silver and likely offer you $1 under spot and you'd do better with it on ebay.

Bottom line, though---from what I've seen, Perth Lunar Series II coins aren't a loser in today's market.

I'm an avid world coin collector but also skipped the Tokelau lunar series for some reason, probably because too many countries are already on that gravy train and the product's getting a little diluted. But for $30, you can do no wrong. It will always have some numismatic value, but beware of trying to sell it at just any run of the mill coin shop. My local coin guy would look at it like it was a snake instead of a horse and offer generic silver wholesale money for it. IMO, you'll get a better price down the road on ebay.

I do not buy to many international coins myself, but I did purchased the 2013 & 2014 Tokelau lunar series coins from MCM on ebay for under $30 each back in July. I picked up these because I like them and the price was right.
