They could be grease, oil, water or something else. In the grease their may be dirt, sand, metal filings, wood, plastic fibers, steel or something else. They can block the dies, affect field areas. Sometimes they stick to the coins struck other times are wiped a way. They block the strike because they don't compress. But it is neat when they are found onto the coin:

Other times what was struck through show evidence of the event, but fell off down the line.
