So,

I go to my favorite agency and ask if they have any coins they have to sell. I finally ended up buying a group of Mercury dimes that looked odd to me.

They were in old style mylars, and a bit dirty to shoot, but his is basically what I saw....

I was looking to see if there was a 1921 in the batch, and it was hard to tell. I haggeled as best I could, and I got the lot for under what I expected which was cool.

So, I am looking at the lot and the 1943 looked - weird.... So I get the package a few hours ago and I open it up. I do a quick look at each coin and I look and see this 1943.....

I was like, what the.... The stinking date looks funky AND the "S" mintmark is way weirdo as well. The "3" is extremely thick and has Two inner center points of the "3". The "S" has a really thin top and the bottom of the "S" looks like it has two feet. Crazy.

Here's what it looks like under the Microscope !

The "S" pic doesn't do the mint mark justice, but I am in a hurry, so I thought I'd take the time to share this el-strange-o 1943 merc with you.

The die that struck your dime was aging and now showing flow lines. This is common on the LDS-VLDS die states. But it is still a nice coin. Worthy of a collection.

I don't know about the "S".
But the "3" looks like it got hit by a coin rolling machine.
Look at the tops of the letters in LIBERTY.
They appear to have the same problem.

Agree.... The "3" has been scraped by something. Probably by another coin a long time ago.

Ok, there is more... Like these two.....

The 1941 "9" is a Super El Thicko digit.

The 1943 is sorta like the same but more weird. It looks like an upside down "U", with three tips on it. Looks like an old Spanish metal war helmet.
And this Inner center point of the "3" is also messed up.

These are most likely due to die wear, flattening and spreading as the die striking ages. True doubling is always rounded.

I find it hard to judge from the last two dates due to the harsh lighting.
