Cupro nickel, used in modern coins, is HARD and almost always causes weakness somewhere. This example is a bit extreme. For a reference, study all of the nickels going back to the shield. After I noticed weak points in nickels from pocket change, I took a closer look at my "V" nickels. Same random weak points. Silver is much softer and did not suffer the same way.
