The "E PLUR..." on this quarter caught my attention. Any thoughts on what caused the weakness here and in "dollar"? It is well worn.

Struck through some grease probably

I agree, it had grease on it when it got struck.

Cupro nickel, used in modern coins, is HARD and almost always causes weakness somewhere.
This example is a bit extreme.
For a reference, study all of the nickels going back to the shield. After I noticed
weak points in nickels from pocket change, I took a closer look at my "V" nickels.
Same random weak points. Silver is much softer and did not suffer the same way.

it has been Struck Through Grease. The rest of the strike is good compared to those areas.
