My local coin dealer has a type two 1981 Susan B.proof that I would like to have to fill a hole in my collection. He would trade it for a roll of silver quarters at today's value. The thing is he said that I may not want to do that at the current silver prices, because it could head higher in the near future. Tempting, but undecided. Would you?

Assuming that the quarters are all junk silver yea I would do it assuming it looked fantastic. Otherwise Id buy one of the pf 69s on ebay and crack it out which run about the same price.

Silvers had a falling price for over 2 years now, you could spend the next decade or more waiting for it to spike again

well melt value on a roll of quarters is $143.45 and numismedia list a 1981 type 2 proof from PF65 $129.60 to 144.00 for Cameo PF65 to $150.00 for deep cameo PF65
so it all depends on how good is the cameo

I wouldn't do it.
I have seen several of the type2 ranging from 100-160
on the E-word, they are going much less than that.
That's just me though.

Although, I can't understand why the prices are still up there. With the popularity or seeming lack there of, of the SBA dollar.

Let's way the pros and cons

Pro:
You need this for your collection

Cons:
Not a popular series
When you sell it, have to find someone who needs it. Basically hard sell.
90% is more popular and easier to sell.

What do you want more, the SBA or the roll or quarters? In my opinion is not a bad trade if the coin is grades well. If you feel comfortable, do it; if not, pass.

Full disclosure, I am seeing this as a collector. I do not worry about coins retaining value for future resale. Costs are applied to enjoyment, not investment.

I would keep the silver quarter roll and shop ebay for the SBA proof.

I would check around on ebay for 1981 proof sets that dont include type 1 or type 2 in the title. You may be able to find a type 2 surprise!
