I have only been buying coins (or anything else for that matter) on ebay for six months. Is the time just before and after Christmas a good time to be buying? Or are people unloading coins in Jan/Feb when the Christmas bills start piling up? Or maybe people are not even listing much stuff around Christmas since they are so busy with Christmas shopping, travel, and visiting? Have any long time ebay shoppers noticed if it makes any difference at different times of the year?

Been a lot busier in the fall and heading in to Christmas. Generally more buyers = higher prices. Spring/summer tends to be quieter.

If my selling experience is any indication, it's an excellent time to be buying. I think many collectors who would otherwise be in the market are concentrating their spending on others, rather than themselves.

From my selling experience I realize highest traffic on ebay (as a seller) in mid September to December. April May are also good. Silver bullion products depend on the obvious. The store front does well in late spring/summer tourist season. As a buyer, summer seems to be optimum.

All of the above. My experience - 15 years selling on ebay - has me shutting down from early November through the middle of January, and I tail off towards the end and beginning of each school year. Edit: Keep in mind my experience may be niche-related (primarily Morgans), and shouldn't necessarily inform the seller of Canadian coins or other types.

Mid September seems to be the tipping point for higher prices realized...on-line .......

Thanks for the replies thus far. In Canada (except west coast) our summers are so short that I can see people not doing a lot of coin related stuff May - Aug. I assumed that ebay stuff might have people's attention when it is too cold to do many outdoor pursuits, especially Dec - Mar. I therefore assumed that in the Dec - Mar period that there would be more buyers looking, but there would be more people listing stuff too so the supply/demand would equal out. This is just hypothesis though - as I said I have only been buying for 6 months and have never sold.

This is a follow up to my original question. For the last six months I randomly checked the number of ebay Canadian coin items for auction each month by picking a few days not consecutive each month. I'm just curious if the readers are surprised by the results? For me personally, my buying was about the same over those six months except for July when I was out of the country on vacation. My buying will slow down now - not because of the time of year, but simply because I have filled in most of my wanted items. By the way, January 2014 seems to be averaging out at around 14,000 for the first third of the month.

I think it depends what you're shopping for. Summer was great for me, at a time when I was shopping for large cents. It seemed like some sellers were letting stock go for auction price with no reserve, and that's when I built up my ICCS large cents at a significant discount. For other genres, summer is a slow time to sell and a good time to buy on ebay. I would guess that translates to coins as well. I would also guess the market for high end coins is less cyclical over a 12 month period, and I also expect fewer of those change hands on ebay. I've found people who can afford such coins are less concerned about the credit card bill that shows up in January. Changes in price on those coins would tend to happen more year over year than through 12 months, in my opinion.
