Lots of people ask for grade opinions.
And lots of people respond (me included).

But just listing a grade isn't really enough.
It would help me and others if responders would include an explanation as to HOW you arrived at the grade you posted.

I'm pretty good at grading, particularly with sets I spend a lot of time on.
I tend to give technical grades, not market grades.
How do I know this?
I've attended two ANA Summer Seminars on grading.

But the point of this post is to get people to explain the "why" of their opinions.
That would help me when Seated or Barber coins are involved.
And even more so with 18th and early 19th century coins.

I use pcgs photograde for technical details. The "grey area" of eye appeal ... is always open to conjecture. What appeals to one man's eye, doens't necessarily appeal to the next man's.

I use my knowledge of ANA standards. Eye appeal is arguable as Chance mentioned but it can usually be mitigated somewhat - ie, a really bright MS coin that has strong pinwheel luster will normally be graded as a 64 or better while a dull or spotted coin will rarely get past a 63. There are exceptions, however - I have seen many coins prof graded that have high grades but terrible eye appeal (IMO).

You have probably noticed this when looking at grades the site members give when they are weighing in on grading coins posted by other members.

Excellent post. There are many times when those E.F. Hutton members shout out "MS-62!" without remarks but sometimes they indicate why. In the non-detailed discussions, those E.F. Hutton members may have limited time and or hope that the posters will do some research (this forum is a great eduction site) to learn a bit more.

So on the coins I know, I use my experience, the rest, I resort to Heritage's archives and put the images side by side.

This topic/statement comes up quite often here, and I still don't see it often enough.
