I just reported the following item which at first glance appears to be an 1811/0 large cent: http://www.ebay.com/itm/28121296071...60718&_rdc=1The seller has three additional "Chinese coppers" as well. I reported those, too. I'm curious to see if ebay will take action and how fast ...

Very similar to ones I was suckered into last year. I checked location of sellers and it was a good distance apart. Must be someone up the counterfeit food chain brokering these in SOCAL. PG

There's a laundry list; you could compare virtually every feature on the coin - variety-specific as well as compared to other Large Cents in general - and point out why it's "wrong." The most blatant to me is the detailing on the reverse wreath leaves. No Large Cent ever looked like that.

How many "full red" early coppers does one see? Also, note that this seller has four such items up for sale! Note the uniformity of color, the seeming perfection of the planchets. Then, I note a general flatness of strike. Compare the stars and date, in particular, to those on a sharply struck original coin (check other websites). Compare the difference in dentils. I expect that some of our more knowledgeable members will chime in with their observations on these items. An EAC dealer/collector friend sent me an email this morning, asking about how to report these fakes. He deserves the credit for the catch. Upon responding, I happened to check out the seller's other offerings. To be fair, the seller may be offering these on consignment and be unknowing when it comes to coins. He does have a 100% rating and offers a 14 day return.

Thanks for the input....I definitely see one obvious aspect when you look at the three other cents posted....they all have the EXACT same oxidation. Is essentially impossible for four coins of this age and different years of mintage to experience environmental conditions that would give them all the exact same degree of surface coloring, never mind as you stated, being so even. Where I get lost is when I have nothing to compare it to. Thanks for the education

clearly fakes. Look at the reverse on the 1797, you can see the red almost peeling off near the rim @ 3o'clock showing an underlying steel/metallic planchet

Check out the large cents that were in this collection: http://images.goldbergauctions.com/...4&lang=1#tocJust like at a coin show, one can comparison shop on ebay, comparing the pics. Then too, there are countless websites that offer great pics of early coppers for comparison. That's what I love about this modern technology, having a virtual library of info at arm's length. Also, we have this great forum wherein we can benefit from ever so many numismatically educated eyes!
