Once again I step into the realm of ungraded coins for my 7070...I'd like to find out what you all think this would grade and what a fair price would be for it since there is apparently a big price swing between the grades of EF40 to AU-50 to MS60 ($100 to $250 to $500) per the books I am looking at! There is some nice toning on the OBV and the pix are lighter than the actual coin is as I am still experimenting with my new camera to take pix. Edited by Nelrak 06/25/2007 4:46 pm

Nelrak, Ahhh another "Seated" enthusiast! This is a beautiful coin my friend which would probably grade between AU55~58 with what I can see in the pics. There is some reverse chatter that might keep it from being MS60 (although I've seen PCGS and NGC MS60 examples with blemishes in the fields ... but they retained mint luster and showed no wear). Since you have it in hand, have you looked for hairlines (evidence of past cleaning). Untouched examples are usually not this bright, so it may have seen a dipping. As for price ... if it were on ebay you'd have to pay around $500 to win the auction. From a dealer somewhere in the range of $200~$350 (depending on final your final grade). If it's MS60+, you may reach $400. Good luck and keep us posted. 5

I don't know these coins as well as some others, but this looks to be XF to AU. I'd lean toward AU if I could see the coin in hand and was convinced that it hadn't been cleaned. For me, the legs and breast on the obverse show very little wear. On the reverse, the leading edges of the wings are very strong, and, more important, the scales on the talons appear distinct for the most part though there may be a hint of wear on the right-most talon on the right foot of the eagle. (Left side of the coin as you look at it.) It seems to me that those talons are usually one of the first places to show wear, but others more comfortable with grading the SLH's may disagree.

Hi Nelrak, I think this coin makes AU55 easily and it has a very nice look. It looks like there may be some hairline scratches in the reverse fields, possibly from cleaning. You should check all areas very carefully for hairlines. A coin this close to mint state should show a strong cartwheel luster effect on both sides when you tilt it under a light. If the luster is there and hairlines are minimal, I'd say you have a winner, especially if you can get it for AU-50 money.

Thanks for the advise. I just got back from the guy's house with the coin. I used my 16x loupe under good lighting and didn't see hardly any hairlines...it has that silver luster with some light marks on the reverse as you all pointed out. It does look really nice in hand and does give off a light pinwheel effect when you move it around. I think I did alright and it is a pretty good coin for $144.50 all things considered!

Congrats, sounds like you got a sweet deal. It's a great coin for your album, although I'd love to find out how PCGS would grade it....

Thanks, I am quite pleased with it! Ya I am researching how to get coins graded, I just like looking at them in my book so much though.

Wow $144.50 is a WINNER! Are you thinking about having it slabbed? That one has potential for mega-profit if that's what you are into. I wouldn't send it to anyone other than PCGS or NGC. The MS examples bring $500 and up on ebay. One that looks as nice as yours would certainly go higher. I cherry-picked an 1860-O in MS off ebay last year (the seller thought it was XF). An ANACS grader at a local coin show gave it an MS-62 opinion and offered 5x what I paid for it. They are hard to part with so it's still in the collection. This is my approval and green with envy emoticon. 4

Very nice coin, can't tell if it has been cleaned or not. I'd grade it AU 58.

I don't think it was cleaned, because: 1. Chemical Cleaning would leave a flat luster that doesn't look near like the official luster of a mint state coin...that spins like an airplane propeller to give an example. The chemicals leave a luster that shines like flat laminated paper instead, without the airplane propeller spin on the shine when you move the mint state coin under a light. 2. Polishing (using a famous oxide) would remove fine details in the coin's design.
Does this coin have a nice spin on the luster when moved under light? How about the crispness of the surface itself? Do you see fine grains of mint surface on this coin?
I'm just going to say that it looks very very close to MS, if not MS60.
