I bought this coin, and probably paid a little more than I should for the grade, because it had such a lovely look and I could still acquire it inexpensively. What do you think? What would you grade it?

Looks like a ton of dirt is on the coin, but removing it would damage it for sure. Being made in 1872, the metal is most likely fused with the grit.

I'll go slightly higher on the grades due to being such an old coin.

Confused by the dirt, I'd give it a F-15.

Possibly without the dirt, it may be VF-20 though, depending on what is actually metal and what is merely debris.

Be it that, I conclude it with an F-18

though for selling...just go ahead and give it VF-20. It's debatable for 1897.

PCGS values this coin at: $48

bluesman,
If you have any "dirty" coins for sale. Please be sure to let me know. I would be glad to take them off your hands at a fair price. PM me if interested.

The coin is NOT dirty. The coin is definitely what coin afficianados call "crusty" which is HIGHLY favorable. The originality and beauty of this piece is amazing

In hand, this coin grades as Choice VF (VF30). You could split hairs about a VF25/35 grade, but based on the overall level of wear and there appears to be a teeny bit of luster under that toning remaining, it's a decent VF/XF+.

I prefer to buy these "dirty" coins ALL DAY LONG. Put me in line behind Benji, please. Remember...I paid a premium for this piece. This is the type of coin that dealers are not seeing much of anymore and the coin rags refer to as becoming more unavailable and highly sought after.

Prethen,

That is one good looking circulated coin! Don't know what you paid but it looks like you'll be happy and that's all that counts.
