Time and again I spend an hour photograding a coin picture to receive a totally different coin One of the biggest sellers Briefmarkenfinger in germany said yes he had two canadian gold series to sell so he made only one set of pictures A Suisse shop sold me an old Leopold I and then sold two more coins with the same picture I saw the same happening with a prof spanish seller These are professional sellers Now from amateurs I just got again in a situation were the pics is not the coins The coins received have both microscratches from taking the dust off with an hankerchief or toilet paper or whatever The ebay sale only stated coin with capsule and certificate and box and gave a blazing beautifull pic purloined somewhere for one coin and a lackidaisical pic for the other coin It did not say original pic it did not say coin untouched The different backgrounds of the pics should have made alarmbells ringing but I had only ten minutes till the end of the auction and the auctions were going nowhere . I got the second coin 4% below goldmelt Now in this particular case I am a bit troubled . I got positive feedback first . I bought the coins for goldmelt and less and they are collectors items but the microscratches make me sad . He is now listing 6 more coins with a buy it now 20% over melt having learned his lesson. If I leave even a neutral feedback explaining ; he is not going to sell his 6 other different coins . I had a good bargain albeit not the coin in the pic but should I warn potential buyers the coins at 20% over melt may have microscratches ?

That's a tough question.
If the seller did not mention that the photo is "stock" and "not the actual coin you will receive" then you can contact the seller and ask for your money back. If the seller refuses, you can initiate a PayPal dispute, stating "The Item is significantly not as described". Most of the time you will get your money back from PayPal.
To warn future buyers, you could leave neutral feedback, stating that the coin had micro-scratches.

I don't think Ageka is worried about returning the coin (please correct me if I'm wrong), but how to handle the feedback situation since the coins were not accurately represented. This is a very tough situation because you still got a good deal but should have received what you expected. I would email the seller before leaving feedback and explain your disappointment and how important it is to let people know if the pics are of the actual coin. Most people assume that the pic will be of the actual coin if it isn't stated that stock photos are used. (Personally, I don't think stock photos should EVER be used, but that's a whole different subject). See how that dialog goes with the seller before leaving feedback. If he seems receptive and then changes his selling practices, I'd leave him a positive since the most important thing is that he's willing to listen. If his reaction is defensive or negative, I'd leave him a neutral or negative with a factual explanation why. I was in a similar situation when I received 4 coins taped to a piece of cardboard from an ebay seller. They weren't in any kind of holder or anything, just taped to cardboard. My initial feeling was that I wanted to leave a negative. I decided to email the seller instead and patiently explained why this is not acceptable. He seemed grateful for the explanation and said he would never do that again as he didn't consider the consequences of taping the coins. I think it's always better to try to give the benefit of the doubt to the seller and give him/her a chance to learn something.

Yes I want to keep the coins since I could resell them immidiately at any shop at the same price or better and I want them anyway . I emailed the seller yesterday and just got the reply I got many times before He bought the coins in that condition at a higher price (and thought to make a quick profit) and lost money on the deal at melt and ebay costs . He kind of begged me not to leave any feedback whatsoever and let it be ; me having a good deal and him being content now just to break even on the 9 or so coins he bought in total . I do not understand these guys ; the capsules show wear ( bad sign loss of transparancy of a capsule shows many mail journeys and many owners ) The coins had pieces of absorbing paper sticking to them showing they had repeatedly been taken out of the capsule . Both signs very visible with the naked eye but not on the stock pics of course . The microscatches only show up under 10x lighted magnification and might have been nothing more then a casual dust wipe with a cloth by one of the previous owners knowing no better . Anyway he is so friendly I cannot bring myself to give even a neutral or a positive that only the price was correct He has 116 positives and I am sure this is a stock pic too http://cgi.ebay.de/ws/eBayISAPI.dll...romot_widget

Maybe he listened to you. The seller ended that listing early. Maybe he's going to relist it with a proper picture.

Yes he ended all his items after my warning they were microscratched
I did not tell him that I made a moral decision not to give feedback
He requested paypal and I informed him that as a fellow euro country I could pay totally costfree by banktransfer which I did so I saved him the 4% cost of paypal In gratitude he gave me two positives upon receiving the money
If I had no feedback I would have let it slide because I want no revenge negative feedback . Since now I have two positives I am going to let it slide too and not punish him for giving feedback first
He has no malice ; just ignorant like so many

Glad this situation worked out for you. Just an added comment, I would be very careful about warning future buyers as you can get in hot water with ebay very quickly, you can unobtrusively warn buyers by the feedback you leave, i.e. "coin received had microscratches, the coin listed was obviously a stock photo without mention being made of same" or something similar. Perhaps this is what you meant, but it seemed to me that maybe you were considering contact buyers in an active auction which can bring trouble. Just my thoughts.

No what I meant is if I leave a neutral comment Price allright coin scratched stock pic Every other buyer would avoid paying 20% over melt for damaged goods unless they were desperate to get the coin But these are all Monnaie de Paris coins and I now if one is patient most will show up at melt sooner or later and most likely on ebay germany like this one from a french vendor

And again I got cheated by a professional shopseller The coin in the pic was AU58 What I got was a 20 FF VF 1848 angel with writing on the tablet Do I leave him a negative ? NO but I will score him the minimum on all four hidden questions I do not want a retaliatory negative on this account . Also sending the coin back in europe costs 15% of the value of the coin in insured postage . So I will eat my loss and stay away from professional sellers most of them too lazy too show the real pic and weazle wording themselves out of lying and knowing that a take back policy is not realistic if it costs you 15 euro to send an insured lettre

I wouldn't bother leaving him any feedback. He doesn't deserve any kind of positive feedback.

As I understand the new system if I leave him a short positive like Thanks and then neg him on all parameters he cannot see I get a pos back for nixing him As long as revenge negs exist the system will never be honest I had sellers begging me not to leave a feedback

The nasty thing about the ebay feedback system is that as a buyer you can fulfill every part of your obligation, as far as following through with payment etc, and then get something disappointing or not what you wanted. If they truly fixed the feedback system the seller would be required to leave feedback prior to the seller being able to leave it. Then feedback would be left by the seller, eliminating the possibility of a retaliatory negative. Frankly I get a bit annoyed with sellers that wait for feedback before they leave it, now I get rather lax about leaving it if I haven't gotten it for fulfilling my part of the transaction. As an alternative just question the sellers of these items before bidding and ask them if the coin in the picture is the one being sent. I know you shouldn't have to do this, but it will eliminate this possibility of disappointment.

I have become an expert at reading between the lines But I presumed because his background to the coin was his own that he was selling the coin in the picture This gets to be more and more like magic descriptions of magic devices where you have to look for omissions No elastics are used, no reels, no sleight of hand , no switches etc These big professional sellers delude themselves they will never ever get a repeat buy and so their auctions have to end lower I know 4 now that use the same pic over and over again and only one guy selling boxed and certificated coins mentions himself he is using stockpictures for his repeat sales One of the offenders is on Spanish ebay the other Swisse ebay the third now French ebay the honest one Austrian ebay .
