This is a first for me - a token with real history. It's a tiny Lauer imitation of a British shilling, with Edward VII on one side and the Victorian design on the other... so it's also my first mule

Compared to a real shilling, it's very tiny... even smaller than my F.A.O. Panama Pill and Dutch 10-cent coins. It may be the smallest "coin" in my collection...

Do people still collect these Lauer imitations? ebay tells me it's not worth much, but it is certainly a neat little (...very little) jeton.

Right, the text!
Around Edward:
LUDW.CHRIST.LAUER.NURNBERG.MADE.IN.GERMANY
Around the shields:
IM.OF.ONE.SHILLING 1902

Looking at my catalog, this date makes it a fantasy. The English "MADE IN GERMANY" indicates that this was made to be exported to its home country... the material is unknown, and the ring test almost got it lost forever under my bookshelf.

The English "MADE IN GERMANY" also gives an idea of the date, if the Edward VII didn't do that already. That phrase on products began to appear on products as a result of the British Merchandise Marks Act of 1887, requiring it on imported goods.
