I store my entire 55 piece cent collection in cardboard 2x2s I bought fairly recently (6 months). Is there a way to tell if the plastic windows are PVC or not? And would the dealer know? Thanks.

As far as I know, PVC was never used for cardboard 2x2 holders. However, it is/was common in the 2x2 flip.

Regardless, most (if not all) cardboard 2x2 holders now use Mylar (or some other brand of BoPET). Not sure what was used before.

It's almost certain they're not. PVC usage is to the end of making the plastic more bendable/flexible, so the container can be folded over repeatedly without cracking. It's an extra-cost process. All the Mylar in a flip has to do is sit there, flat.

I've never see a PVC cardboard holder. Now fold over flips with pockets are another story. What you have is most certainly Mylar film, very thin hand strong saran wrap type film, though much stiffer and less wrinkles than saran wrap.

Safe-T flips that are PVC free are quite brittle and will crack if bent repeatedly.

PVC or vinyl flips are soft and have an underwater like apearance to them when viewed through at a distance like a window. They are used by many dealers as they are okay for short term storage only (dealers tend to go through stock pretty regularly), but a huge NO-NO for long term storage. Anyone that is dealing with many coins at once prefers the PVC flips as they are supple and easy to pop coins in and out of easily and without cutting up one's cuticles. Just never store your coins in them long term, or anywhere near a heat source. The plastic PVC isn't the issue, it's the out gassing that can occur - it turns into a hydrochloric acid that has a green sticky look and will etch into a coins surface causing pitting or other damage which is almost impossible to reverse or remove without further damaging the coin.

When in doubt toss the holder and get some you are sure about for storage.

They did make PVC 2x2s once, way back in the day. I doubt there are many still around; they'd have likely turned sticky and useless long before now.

If you wish to do a really old-fashioned high-school-demonstration-type chemical test, look up "Beilstein test for PVC". Basically, you melt or wrap a tiny piece of the plastic onto a small loop of copper wire, and burn it in a Bunsen burner or similar flame. If you get a bright green flame, it means you've got bucketloads of chlorine in the plastic - which usually means PVC.

I don't think I need to say that this is a "destructive test"; you'll need to sacrifice one of the questionable 2x2s to conduct this test. If you insist on non-destructive testing, you'll have to go for something like XRF. Which can be pretty expensive, just to test a ten-cent piece of plastic.

I know this an old thread but for anyone listening, I'm pretty sure the coin flips and 2x2s by BCW are made with PVC!

The flips I can see, but the cardboard 2x2s? I have never seen one that was not Mylar.

jbuck I got the 2x2s by BCW one time and they smelled like a shower curtain. I waited tpo long to return them, so I couldn't, so I just threw them out.

Wow. I cannot imaging a 2x2 being made with PVC. I wonder if they were just contaminated, like being kept in close quarters with vinyl pages or flips? Tossing them was probably the right call. It is better safe than sorry. 2x2s are cheap enough.
