"Best" for what purpose? Insurance against a currency collapse? Common, junk silver coins because people are familiar with them. "Best for appreciation?" In modern coins I cannot think of any. You would have to go back farther. "Best for me?" Other members have covered that point. If you are both a collector and an accumulator of silver both the Roosevelt dimes and Franklin halves can be assembled as complete sets at close to bullion value. A short set of Washington quarters from 1940 to 1964 should be easy to do. Only you can say what is best for you. Report this Post to the Staff
AES Valued Member United States 452 Posts	Posted 11/29/2013 12:10 pm I've been most happy with silver uncirculated sets and proofs I've built/collected over the years. IMHO, it's hard to go wrong with BU or proof US silver coins having small premiums over current spot. If looking for a little physical silver to put back, I like old junk halves that aren't too worn. For some of us it's hard to shake the collecting bug even when hoarding silver. There's nothing wrong with fresh new ASEs if the premium isn't too crazy. Report this Post to the Staff

Myself I like the liberty walker and Franklin halves. I like the washington silver coins. Silver Eagles are nice. But what I collect now and basically nothing else are Commemoratives (most of them are silver and affordable; so assembling a nice collection and even a complete collection is not an in-surmountable task.
