that depends on several things:
- are you pulling only from circulation or buying from dealers?
- is a complete set your main goal?
- what is your budget for getting the rare/costly coins?

Youre gonnah have to be specific. Points made by GR58 and Fuzzy317 are both important, keep those mind. If you want some advice you can drop me an email and depending on what you want maybe I can recommend a type of coin to you but other than that there isn't much to say. I personally keep a good balance between scrap, bullion and rare silver coin with quantities bein in 50, 20 and 30 percent respectively. Values though would be more like 30, 10 and 60 percent. Budget factors in too and for a low budget maybe starting with scrap would be better than spending all of your money on just on rare coin. I also like to have some gold on hand; don't really collect base metal coins though...

The inference I get from your question, is that you are interested in Silver Bullion coins, and want to know about Silver Eagles, Maple Leads, Libertads , Kookaburras and such. Would I be correct ?

Don't ever melt down silver coins, no matter what their condition is. You'll find somebody who will give more than melt value for them. If you are thinking about melting down old silver coins, PM me and we'll work out a deal. Old coins are a part of our nation's history, and I hate to see them melted down to make tacky jewelry.

As for finding silver, I've had the best luck with Roosevelt dimes. I've found over 30 of them from June until the present (November). I also found a 1912-D Barber dime in a Coinstar machine. I've found a couple of War Nickels, a couple of silver quarters (including a 1976-S 40% bicentennial quarter), 3 Ben Franklin half dollars, and a bunch of 40% JFK halves. Coworkers have also found silver quarters in the drawer. I haven't found any silver dollars in circulation, but I suspect they are extremely rare. Silver is out there, you just have to search through a lot of change to find them. I work at a convenience store which is great for finding old and unusual coins.

I would buy from coin dealers. My price range is anywhere from $40 and below.

Here's a single night's haul that I got at work a few months ago. They're in rough shape but they're real silver dimes.
