Greetings CC , I need an expert opinion on this coin.

I have heard of 1922-D low relief but never heard of a high relief 1922-D. The coin has also turned a coffee brown and looks like a satin finish type coin but I really don't know much about these except for what I found online which is very little. Lots of info on the 1921 coins but not much on the 1922-D. I have owned 25+ of these coins and seen images of hundreds and this one by far, is the most unusual, in the strike and coffee brown appearance.

Thanks in advance for any constructive comments.

Hard to give an opinion without images. While you work on getting images, if you have a magnet around...see if it sticks to the coin. In my travels some of the brown silver dollars I have come across are brown due to rust, being that they are fake and make of steel. A small chance, but it is there. Look forward to seeing images and thanks for posting...Happy Thanksgiving, Hanukkah, Thanksanukkah, Thanksgivikah or whatever you are celebrating! :-)

Guess I posted too fast.... from the images I say low relief

Welcome to Coin Community.

This one's pretty easy. The High Relief 1922's were only minted in Philadelphia. It's not possible for one to have a Denver mint mark. Yours is a nicely-struck coin, but by definition Low Relief.

There are other clear differentiating details, even more easily seen than unholyroller's (correct) images, but they're not necessary here.

Thanks for all the good information so far.

But is there a 1922-D defined as the "low relief" variety?

I ask because while researching, I saw a coin being offered for sale by a major coin dealer, as the "low relief" variety. Or is there only one 1922-D Peace dollar with some being better struck than others.

That was just a redundant statement on the dealer's part. The inherent implication that a 1922-D which *isn't* Low Relief exists, is untrue. The fact that he mentioned it doesn't recommend him well.

Dave...thanks for backing me up....as always, when I give my opinion on a "this or that" coin I try to give my opinion as well as educate. Regardless fthe fact there never was a high relief Denver 1922 Peace dollar, I thought the visual would be helpful in explaining the cosmetic differences.
