Hey everyone! below is an error/variety I have been finding here and there for the last 5 years in various junk bins around Vancouver Island. It is the 1951 commemorative nickel I call the "missing nose bridge". I have asked anyone who would listen about it but no one seems to know anything about it. Paccoins actually suggested I join coin community and post it for all to see. He also thought it might be a Zoell listing but he wasn't sure.

picture 1 you can see how the line from the forehead disappears above the nose making the nose seem to float...

picture 2 shows the same coin on the left and a regular coin without the "missing nose bridge"...

picture 3 shows the 7 I have found so far and the 1 regular in the top right...

picture 4 shows the reverse of the same 7 plus 1...

I also found one yesterday but in a different year. 1942 5 cent tombac. it actually shows all the way around the head including hair, lips, and chin as well as the missing nose bridge! reminds me of Han Solo getting dipped in carbonite lol.

So if anyone can shed some light on this error/variety or have any comments please let me know. Anyone else have one? I haven't found one yet with the half moon on the back but I keep looking!! thanks for your input. Rob

For Victoria, Edward and GeoV coins the missing nose bridge is a marker of Chinese counterfeits.
Hope that's not the case here.
"Dipping" is not considered cleaning...

I can't see a common nickel like the 51 commemorative being counterfeited. not enough return on investment in my opinion. any other counterfeit markers to look for DBM? thanks for your comments.

I have seen the missing nose bridge phenomenon on quite a few coins of George V1, across a few British Commonwealth Countries. I have never paid much attention to it until now.

I am left a little curious as to what causes it.

Hi robmck1967

This defect is the result of the polishing working die.

Here is the result on 1 ¢ 1962 extreme polishing working die.

I found the same one. It has a die crack through A of Gratia? I also thought about it being a marker for a fake coin, I sent it to nickelsguy. If he reads this post he should be able to comment on it being genuine or not :)
I also doubt they would make fake 1951 comm nickel, so it's probably a polished die, as Castor pointed out.

castor: I didn't stay curious for long!

Your explanation helps to explain why I have seen this on coins of other British Commonwealth countries also.
Thanks for the info.

I have seen that on the tombac coins, especially 1942 circulation examples.
