I am not sure if these notes are German or Allied: they are in German, dated 1944, but do not have any swastikas (which would be expected in Nazi Paper Money) Their serial numbers are in sequence. I will be listing them on ebay later tonight with two other WWII items. Image: Sequenced Notes.jpg40.58 KB Image: Sequenced Notes Reverse.jpg32.62 KB Andrew

There was money issued to the troops that was used to purchase items in an occupied country. I don't know if this is it, but here's the history. The troops were able to purchase script that would be used in the occupied country, then taken to the bank and converted into the local currency. The Germans then basically made the central bank of the occupied country cover the cost of this script as an occupation cost. Basically it turned spoils of war into cold hard Marks for the war machine. And made the local populace much more amenable to the pillaging. I've been reading 'Hitler's Beneficiaries' by Aly Gotz. http://www.amazon.com/Hitlers-Benef...p/0805079262

In a brief moment I decided to react. There was a time that Europe was occupied by the Nazis.
The Allied Supreme Head Command decided that goods could be bought and paid by money guaranteed by the French, American and British Troops. This banknote was legal tender for 50 marks until new mponey was printed throughout Germany. It was only valid in the Part which was called Western Germany. In 1946 and 1947 there was hno German Government, in 1948 Germany gets a Bank and begins minting pfennig-coins with mentioning BANK DEUTSCHER LÄNDER. In 1950 the first Mark was minted. In 1952 the Western part became known as Bundesrepublik Deutschland, the Eastern (occupied by Russian) became known as DEUTSCHE DEMOKRATISCHE REPUBLIK; The same year the first banknotes were printed which replaced the ALLIERTE banknotes in a fortnight.
So your banknote is used as legal tender after the Battle near Remagen (1944) until the latter part of 1952.

The ones used in the western zones of Germany have a small F on them in the lower corner, for Forbes Lithograph. The plates without the F on them were given to the Soviets, and theirs were printed in Moscow. They did not print as many as the western powers did, and largely used older German currency with validation stamps on it until 1948 when they released the DDR Mark in response to the western occupation powers releasing the DM that year.
