I am reasonably new to collecting.

At the moment I am at the stage that I will happily buy a big bundle of coins if I feel there is a chance it is a completely unsearched bundle, or if its a passed down collection that the seller doesn't have any interest in or know much about.

This is the 'gambler' in me I guess. I know its not ideal... and you don't win the lottery every day, I also know this is how to end up with a tonne of worthless coins, most people appear to have negative experiences of these. I am interested to know of any good experiences of this?

Many years ago (early 2000's) I was buying lots of Morgan dollar lots in groups of 10-50 dollars at a time EF-AU grades, and was getting some really good VAMs out of them, some from around $12/each cost to $100-600/each sales! Haven't had much luck in any other series trying lots buys. VAMs are pretty well known now, and many will at least look for the Top 100 VAMs at a minimum. In wheat pennies Buffalo nickels I've never had any luck, had a few decent type coin lots as far as turning them over for a profit by listing them separately and having much better photos than they had been listed with in the lot, seems that is what I'll keep an eye out for now days. Poor photos that I can still tell what I'm getting, and lots of type coins in the mix, I stay away from sellers that have sold a lot of similar stuff in their past, looking for people dumping off grandpa's old coin accumulations. I wouldn't really call them collection as there is usually a hodge-podge of items, with many not even being in holders, or albums.

There will always be "good" experiences, if only because the new owner is better at searching varieties than the old. However, it's a complete fallacy to assume any lot is "unsearched." If you always assume any lot you acquire has already been looked through by an expert, you will never be disappointed.
