Just remembered this site from my trip to Iceland a few years back:
Þingvellir,-Iceland
This is the Peningagjá spring in Þingvellir, where Icelanders convened in Parliament from 930 to 1798. Today, it is a national park, and it is evenly divided between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. Anyway, it's traditional to throw coins into this spring , and if I remember correctly, some archaeologists went for a little dive and found Viking-era coins at the bottom of it all! Just thought I'd share...

About 15 years ago I was stationed in northern Japan, (Yagan area, near Misawa), and just for fun went diving in a mountain river where we went camping most weekends. There was a walkbridge over the river and people would throw coins from the bridge for good luck. In the rock riffles on the bottom there were lots of coins. They were mostly old and corroded and didn't have much value so I only picked up a few, but the visual of seeing them lying everywhere sure evoked visions of finding treasure!

There are stories of drunk locals jumping in to try and recover some of the coins. I wouldn't want to jump into that water though it is incredibly cold.

There is a nice shiny loonie sitting at the bottom though thanks to me.
