Think its a possible combination of the picture's white balance and the light background.

Color looks fine on my laptop and the coin appears genuine but may have rim damage. The detail is high AU/low MS, tough to pin a grade but as a raw piece let's say AU55. Value would be around $250 if AU and problem-free. Many of these have problems but that one looks free of any severe damage/harsh cleaning/etc. These get expensive even in low MS grades and would be a $500 piece as a problem-free MS62.

with BH1964, color looks spot on from my iPhone... I'm not even seeing hints of silver.
As for grade, I'm in the mid to high AU camp. And depending on the pics may have a shot at MS... Just out of curiosity, if you dont mind answering, how much is he selling it to you for?

Hard to determine MS grades from pics (even good ones) but I'll take a stab at it and say MS-63. If there is in fact friction not evident in the pick, of course it would probably fall in the 55 to 58 range. Gold is
Not my specialty.

looks genuine although for a moment I feared a cast copy due to the depth of the rims and the rub off of color on the reverse near the bottom of the "1" but I trust some of the experts who have chimed in already

It looks dipped. AU details grading. you should not pay more than $125 for this coin. If you're talking about spending $250, pass on this one and bid here:

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1853-1-TYPE...em2ecc52735e

even if you do not win there are always plenty of others in AU55/53 as well to own. Problem free and slabbed by the finest known is not a bad way to go when you do not know the finer intricacies of raw gold.

good luck either way

@dsfree

1) That link does not ship to Canada which is where Ivan123 lives
2) He's already bought the coin: http://www.ebay.com/itm/1853-United...em4179b6ef6c

I don't think $212 is awful but with shipping and import charges (I hate the global shipment program; who ever though of that!) he'll be paying $250 which is bout $80 over what he should be. Still it's up to the buyer to decide what they want to pay.
