It is a Roman Republican Denarius and a nice coin. It does appear to be real. Coins in this condition run from $95-$150. So if you can get it for $100 if would be a good price.

Why the seller is touching the coin like that?

Surfaces of must ancients aren't as delicate as modern mint-state coins, so holding it in his hand like that won't really harm the coin.

Unlike modern coins where oil from fingers and finger prints leave marks on the coin and reduce the value. That's not the case with ancient coins. It's OK to handle them without worry.

Very interesting to know. And cheaper avoiding coin holders :-)

that's seems reasonable for the coin...wish the pictures were better, but looks like an attractive denarius to me. he does have a "make an offer" button also!

Congratulations, good buy. If the seller's info is correct it dates from 147BC.

Because ancient coins can be fully patinated, oil from fingers, unless it is acidic cooking fat or the like, won't harm them.
Museums have even been known to preserve ancient coins, by rubbing them with Renwax. Personally, I would NOT go THAT far. At least, that product is easily removed with acetone.
That's a rather nice Republican denarius, and in slightly better condition than mine.

Also, if anyone says you cant clean ancient coins, that is certainly not true, cleaned ancients are the norm (including the one you just bought Muddler, congrats btw!). Most ancient coins have to be so they can be identified when first found.

Looks like a nice starter ^^ even veteran collectors would be happy to add that one...
I personally prefer the style of the earlier Roman Republican coins of their later counterparts, for $85 I think you got a fair deal on a pretty decent coin :)

I don't remember where that's from, but probably CCF. Roughly paraphrased (it's been over a year). " All ancient coins have been cleaned. Even those with an inch of dirt of them: they used to have two inches." (EDIT: Found it.)
