1968 S Dirt Spot? - Coin Community Forum

brixxx27 Valued Member United States 123 Posts	Posted 12/08/2013 5:07 pm in a local store today I receive this 1968 s gold colored coin,pretty shining.but it have what it appear to be a dirt spot on lincolns forehead,looks like rust.i dont want to clean it because a friend told me if you clean it the coin been damaged.what can I do? * Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. * Report this Post to the Staff

RogerRamjet Valued Member United States 172 Posts	Posted 12/08/2013 11:35 pm Pure acetone, with the emphasis on pure, is a coin-safe organic solvent. Depending upon the composition of the contaminant, acetone might dissolve it. Don't rub it or rinse it with anything. Just a quick dip to see if the spot dissolves and then let it air dry before putting it in a holder. Hardware stores are the most common place to find pure acetone. Look for 99% or higher. If it remains, it is either a sulfide or an oxide stain. Either you accept it or you don't. For me, it is quite acceptable. Report this Post to the Staff
