To copper collectors out there, does anyone have an explanation as to why the 1809 C-4 seems to be priced so high by retailers on ebay? This is an R2 variety and it's not something that a type collector would be searching out, so what is driving the price so high? I actually find these in low grades or with problems all the time, almost as frequently as the C-5 9 inverted 9 variety, but when it comes to nice examples, asking prices go to ridiculous levels. I've been putting together a nice group of classic head Half Cents, but I've pretty much decided to ignore the C-4 for now despite it being a Red Book variety and listed on the major registry set lists. I haven't seen one come up in a true auction in recent memory so I'm not sure what a true market value would be for a nicer example.

In the meantime, I picked up a VG C-2 (R3-) example on the cheap (tough coin to find in high grades) to fill that "hole" in my set.

Thoughts on the 1809 varieties and prices? I'm still hoping to cherry pick a C-1

Breen's Half Cent encyclopedia has the 1809 C-4 listed as "High Rarity 3, nearly R-4.
This was the last Classic Head Half Cent I acquired for my Red Book listed set.
The 1809 C-4 that I got graded NGC VF-20
Getting the two 1811 varieties was a lot easier.

Considering the time it took me to find one in an affordable grade I think R-4 is closer to the truth than R-2.
I strongly suggest the CDN and Red Book prices are totally wrong.
CW value is more in line with the truth.

The other two 1809's I have are a C-5 and a C-6.

Kanga thanks for your insights! I will peruse the CW prices and keep looking for true auction sales. Come to think of it I have seen more true auctions of 1811 then I have of the c-4 1809. The one year I rarely see is 1810.

For my other 1809's I have a C-3 and a C-5. Ill probably try to grab all the cohen varieties for the classic head series regardless but I wanted to get the majors first. That C-4 has just been throwing me for a loop.

The 2013 Quickfinder lists C-4 (small o inside 0) as being an R2.

Jerseyben, I picked up that quick finder guide and I have almost memorized the classic head varieties. It's an awesome little book and where I got the R2 value.

I really need to do two things with my Classic Head Half Cents:
-- find out what varieties I have
-- re-image all of them; it's one of my older sets and I have a much better camera now

Here it is in the NGC Registry (click on the "eye" towards the right to see my current images)
