hi all, I hope all is well. After much reading and learning on here and a little push from a certain awesome member who gave me the coins that inspired me to jump into buying and collecting instead of just roll hunting and dreaming of finding older coins I've made my first official coin purchases and was wondering what you guys think. I started real small but think I did ok overall. this one I think I overpaid by about .50-.75 (he accepted $3.50 after some haggling) but I like it and I was going to max out at 3 but I decided what's another .50? and went for it. http://www.ebay.com/itm/11122079385....m1439.l2649The next lot I think I did fairly decent, the 1911 and 1911 d both look about good/good to me and the 1899 is kind of hard to see so I'm kind of optimistic. at $2.50 each I think I got a fair deal on them. I know these are small fry to most of you guys but I'm excited DOH!!! I forgot the second link! http://www.ebay.com/itm/31079217395....m1439.l2649Edited by justin3651 11/22/2013 03:12 am

It's a start, can't really say much about the coins from the sellers photos they are all out of focus by a good margin. The fact that you are pleased is really all that matters, you didn't over pay by too much. And the seller didn't make a killing after ebay and paypal take their cuts out. Try local coin shops if there are any near you, sometimes you can pick up later date or more common Barber dimes for near melt, but usually they will bring a small premium over melt due to their age.

Personally, if you pay under 4 for common Barber dines in at least decent shape, you did not do bad.

I wish I had a coin store nearby to buy from, all of them I've found so far are out of my driving range(our vehicle is on it's last legs and I certainly don't want to be too far from home)so far though sadly. I would probably spend a lot more overall once I got started though so maybe it's not a totally bad thing since I'm supposed to be saving for a new vehicle :p. Thanks for the advice and reading my thread :)

You might have a nice looking coin with the 1899. Not bad prices at all, maybe a tiny bit high but worth it if that 1899 turns out to be as nice as I think it could.

Be careful with lower grade common coins. While they can usually be had for a bargain, when you eventually go to upgrade, you'll most likely be selling them to someone else also looking for a bargain. It's a good way to get started for filling albums, but keep an eye on it. If you start noticing that you have doubles and triples, it's probably a sign that your strategy should shift to obtaining better examples.

Thanks for the advice. I plan to hold on to them and pass them to my future kids or grandkids to try to get them hooked on collecting too. :) 2 more bought. http://www.ebay.com/itm/14111742266....m1439.l2649I am quite happy with this one. It was a very fair price and It will fill a hole. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1916-S-Barb...p=true&rt=ncI am far from a pro but it looks to be "optimistically" described grade wise. however, I bought it taking that into account and the price I paid was what I was willing to pay for the coin as is so I'm happy with it and the price.

While these dimes may be small fry to me your enthusiasm is something that I find priceless. This series is my specialty and my focus. But I have never forgotten the humble background which gave me the initial interest. I'd be able to help you if you decide this is a series that interests you. For the time being, I'd suggest you just study the appearance of these dimes. Lie them all in a line or two and take a good, close look. I'll bet some look better to you than others. This training for your eyes is well worth the $$$ you paid for them. And will make you a more discerning buyer in the future. Go to the Barber Link is my signature if you have not already done so. Lots of research material there and free.

The melt value right now is $1.40 and IMO is only going to go up, I think you're doing great.

Thanks for the advice and compliments. Mathew, I've been studying them and online pics a lot the last few days and as you predicted I've become a more discerning buyer. I've started passing up g4ish coins that don't have decent looking rims and those with ugly corrosion/pitting/other damage now at full retail prices. in other news, I missed a few decent coins yesterday I was hoping id win. the 1913 s being very painful for me as I really wanted it at that price as I was really hoping to knock out a semi-key or two this paycheck. I would of went up to 15 but it got sniped with like 5 seconds before the end so I didn't have enough time to get to the page and make the bid. http://www.ebay.com/itm/35094044287....m1435.l2649sure it's got awful rims but for this one I was willing to overlook that. this one went over what I was willing to pay right at the very end. http://www.ebay.com/itm/1893-O-Barb...p=true&rt=ncit would of been very nice to knock that one out too. but oh well, who knows? maybe the money I would of spent on them will end up going for an even better deal. I sure hope so.
