Can anyone tell me the grade of this piece and I'm also curious to the significance of the 5 in the upper left hand corner (the reverse) of the note. Anyone know what this is? I haven't found another one the has this 5 in the corner like this one does.

In nice shape; thanks for sharing! Spinner sure had a distinctive signature, didn't he?

According to Kravitz book "A Collectors Guide to Postage and Fractional Currency" it appears to be a FR-1255. That is, a 10c, Third Issue, Greenback, with printed signatures, and no position indicator. The last issue of the Bank Note Reporter shows a value range of $25 in Fine to $100 in CU. As for a grade, I'm going to waffle and say that I'd want to see it before giving an opinion. It has a small tip fold and some roughness to the bottom margin so I doubt it is in XF. It also has what appears to be wrinkling, possibly from humidity or water damage. Just as a guess I am thinking a F-VF. As to the "5" I don't have clue. I can't tell for certain if its printed or handwritten from the photo and I don't find any info as to its reason. Possibly a banker or merchant counting mark? The guidebook shows that a qty of almost 170 million of the 3rd Issue 10C notes were printed with 10.5 million outstanding as of 1884.

By the way, the Fall Issue of The California Numismatist has an article by Dr. Sol Taylor specifically on the evolution of Spinner's signature. Check out,

Thanks, Philadelphian and Jimjumper. Very good information on this note and I never knew about the Spinner signature. Very neat indeed! That's why I love this forum; There's always something to learn.

I have some more fractionals I'd like to post to get some more information on, so I may be periodically putting up a thread or two.
