All right, I promised myself when I started collecting paper money that I wasn't going to collect anything higher than $20 bills. They are just too darn expensive at face value, and the prices can get crazy expensive very quickly. Or so I thought... I posted a week or so ago about a beat-up Series 1934A $100 Federal Reserve Note I got for face value at the bank. I tried to resist the temptation when the teller offered it to me, but it looked so cool that I had to have it. Since I don't officially collect $100 bills, I decided to just file it under "Miscellaneous." But then I was browsing an on-line auction I frequent occasionally and, on a whim, ended up bidding on (and winning) this little gem: [I thought it would go nicely with my Series 1914 $5, $10 and $20 notes.] So, now I had two hundred dollar bills. A little research then told me that I should actually be able to get a decent Series 1928A for under $200, so I picked this one up for $175 at APMEX: That that gets me up to three. Guess I am collecting $100 bills after all... Next (and possibly last) stop on the $100 train will be a Series 1966 One Hundred Dollar Legal Tender Note. So now I have a section in my currency album for $1, $2, $5, $20 and $100 bills. But, wait... Oh noes! I don't have any $50s! Well, a little more research indicates that I should be able to pick up a decent Series 1928 and 1934 to match the $100 bills I already have for under $150, and a quick visit to ebay later: So, now all I need to do is find a nice Series 1914 $50 Federal Reserve Note. Probably have to wait awhile next year since I just blew all my budget...

acloco... Very nice looking collection. These older bills look more regal than today's currency.

Great snags, there! The price of such items always amazes me, but then I remember that they're still legal tender. I have a couple of $100 that I wish I could sell, as they do take up a lot of working capital (and can be spent). I think I'll just give them to my offspring once they become responsible.

If ya own a series 1914 $100 note, you are now officially a $100 note collector ;)
Nice circulated example of one you have there.

I've long been fascinated by the design on the reverse of the series 1914 $100 note, btw. First of all, the subject matter is completely allegorical/mythological, whereas the other notes in the series depict real things such as Columbus's discovery of America and the landing of the Pilgrims (the $5 note), Farming and Industry ($10 note), different modes of travel ($20 note) and the Panama Canal, albeit with an allegorical representation of Lady Panama depicted between two ocean liners ($50). Second, the style of the artwork on the $100 reverse is almost a line drawing, compared to the heavily shaded images that appear on the other notes in the series.

Wow BarryG! You've certainly made me envious. I still need the 50 and 100 for the 1914s - With luck, 2014 will be my year to get my 1914 set done. I love those 1914 100's for the same reasons you've already mentioned. But the price has left me wanting. You're collection is certainly looking good - Congrats!

BarryG, If your thinking of going on up to the $ 500.00 I have one that I'll be letting go in a few month's or sooner. As you can see it's in nice XF and of course it will be traded or sold very reasonable. It's a nice no problem note but I just want one that will match the condition of the other $ 100. and $ 50. I have. I'm trying to up grade it to a AU or even a Unc. I don't know how long it will take to find what I'm looking for but I made up my mind to do it. Regards Bill Collector
