This is a detailed walk through of my first experience with PCGS to the present day. It is a little much I think, but I wanted to include as much information as I could for those who are curious. Sorry in advance for not having pictures, I didn't take pictures prior to sending the coins in. I thought about it and really did not want to take the time for all the coins. If you would like to know any specifics about the coins or the process, I would be happy to share. I cut out the submission numbers and a few other things to clean up the post.

It always seems to be a topic here, so I thought I would share my first experience with PCGS. I have been a member of NGC in the past and sent several coins in over the years with some pretty good results. I wanted to try PCGS, so I joined at the Platinum level. After a few weeks of buying additional coins to send in, I started the process of narrowing down my submission coins. I wanted to send in some type coins I purchased in the last month, some graded dollars I have purchased over the last few years, and a number of other dollars I picked up to send in.
My grading skills are better on some coins than others. I would say Morgan dollars, is a strong area for me followed by a moderate knowledge of Barber coinage and V-nickels.

To determine what I was actually going to send in, I evaluated the condition of each coin to determine if:
A. The raw type coins had XF or better details.
B. Raw Morgans had at least MS63/64 potential or proof like qualities without obvious signs of damage or cleaning.
C. Graded coins had potential to be upgraded.
D. Graded coins would benefit being in PCGS holders.

I went through my packet pcgs sent me. I started to use the submission sheets included, then I found the online submission forms on the PCGS website. I created approximately 4 submission types, which are all listed with the coins below.

I wanted to submit all 4 orders in one shipment. So I followed the instructions about submitting multiple orders for one shipment. I then made sure I had the coins in the recommended bigger submission flips. I put each submission in a zip lock bag with the coins labeled and the submission form. I then shipped it off 11/21 registered as recommended and because I submitted some expensive coins.
PCGS sent me a confirmation 11/27 saying the received the coins. The orders numbers were then available to see online, however unlike NGC, you could not see what the orders actually consist of. I then, put it at the back of my mind so I could try and not wear out the website. I did realize that I forgot to include my voucher for the 8 free submissions . As soon as I realized it, I emailed PCGS and asked them if it was a problem. The next day I received a emailed response in which support said they had the number from my voucher and that was all the needed .
I checked the status a week or so later, but tried not to over do it and on 12/6, my brother asked me if I had heard anything about my coins. I then got on to check and they had posted the results from my 8 voucher coins.

12/6 Results from voucher submission
Line# Item Date Denomination Grade
1 1 1851 1C Genuine - VF Details (92 - Cleaned)
2 1 1903 5C MS62
3 1 1862 H10C Genuine - XF Details (92 - Cleaned)
4 1 1877-CC 10C Genuine - XF Details (92 - Cleaned)
5 1 1903-O 10C AU55
5 2 1903-O 10C Genuine - XF Details (92 - Cleaned)
6 1 1907 10C AU58
7 1 1876 25C Genuine - XF Details (97 - Environmental Damage)
*Thoughts about the results - I really can't be disappointed, all of these coins with the exception of the 77cc dime, I had a very minimal investment in. All of the coins were purchased from dealers raw in the last few months. The only coin in which I was disappointed was the 77cc dime. However, I knew the coin was dipped and borderline AU, but thought "What the hell, I will send it off". Very pleased (of course) with the 03 V-Nickel and AU Barber dimes.

12/9 - Results posted from Reconsideration Submission
Line #Coin Date Denomination Grade
1 1 1886-O $1 USA MS62 (No change)
2 1 1891-CC $1 MS62 (Bumped up from a MS61)

*Thoughts about the results - I am happy with the upgrade of the 91CC dollar. The coin was in a green holder, not a rattler. The 1886-O wasn't a long shot, but it was worth a try. I really didn't send it in having the expectation of a upgrade, but it would have been nice!

I just thought I would share my experience to this point. So far, I have been happy with the timeline and service from PCGS. If there is interest, I will update as soon as I see more results.
Thanks and I hope this helps in any future decisions.

Sounds like a learning experience. I don't care for the crossover thing at all though.

Economy Submission

9. 1 1897 $1 MS - MS62
10. 1 1900 $1 MS - MS64
11. 1 1902-O $1 MS - MS64

*Notes: I really can't say anything bad about this submission! I am pretty pleased. I will have to look at the 79s when it gets in to see what damage they were referring to.

Summary: I was really happy with my first experience with PCGS.
Positives: Quick turn a rounds, grades were posted soon (with the exception for a 24 hour period when the site was down, and they send you a blue plastic PCGS slab case with most of the orders I have received (which I never got with NGC).
Negatives: PCGS cannot combined orders for return postage, which NGC does do.

Last but not least, here is a couple of the coins...and a example of a couple quick sub-par quick pictures.

Very nice group of coins you sent in, love the 0 Barber dime. I would be happy with those results as well.

It is annoying they wont combine shipping, I think they do it though because of the different order processing waits. Once theyre done with something they wont hold it for your other order to be completed.

Are you going to be sending any of them to CAC?

I really cant hold it against them that they do not hold orders to ship. I could see it getting to be a nightmare in some scenarios when there would be peoples orders all over the place waiting for other orders.

If I had a membership to CAC (if they were accepting) or had a outlet, I would probably send quite a few coins to them. Especially the better date stuff, along with the borderline grade coins i.e.;55's,58's,61's &62's.

I don't really hold it against them either. I can only imagine the disasters that would occur holding orders and deciding how long to wait for another order ect. When they finish the same day it's a little brutal but I'd rather just get stuff as it ends too.

If you call CAC you can get on their waiting list for whenever they randomly accepts some new members. They used to let you do that anyway.
