Now that ebay has changed it's policy about cracking-out certified coins (centsles got them to allow crack-outs) I see tons of cracked-out coins listed. Here's a FAILED crack-out:
http://coins.ha.com/c/item.zx?saleN...o=9707#Photo
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1852-20-Gol...em20dcd17f7c
The ebay crack-out guy, cns90210, ruined the coin even more when he put a severe scratch through the "R" in LIBERTY. This guy pathetically claims the scratch he put on this coin is, "a die crack on the obverse that occurred during the minting process. It's not a defect."

Let them crack out all the coins they want.
If the coin is NOT shown in the INTACT holder then it's raw.

How on earth would ebay know if a coin had been cracked out of a slab?

"How on earth would ebay know if a coin had been cracked out of a slab?"

Coins are like fingerprints, no two are exactly the same. It is fairly easy to match a coin forensically. ebay members were reporting these crack-outs (coins are cracked-out of problems holders and sold raw in an attempt to hide their defects) to the CCW and Judith at ebay. Recently, however, centsles was caught cracking-out coins. ebay than decided to change their policy to accommodate him. As I said before, it is ebay's site and they make the rules. IMO, this is a policy change that will hurt ebay sales as more buyers will find they have been taken. Only suckers would buy raw expensive coins on-line as any problem can easily be hidden.

Cranking is neither illegal nor immoral. It's what you do with the result that matters.

I suppose it's not immoral until you call it BU and fail to disclose that it's previously been graded AU, cleaned and scratched.

This guy, cns90210, is one slick operator.....He has removed his high res pics of the 1852 $20 Lib and replaced them with crap pics and, he has listed this same coin twice:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1852-20-Gol...em3cda1c8195

and
http://www.ebay.com/itm/1852-20-Gol...em20dcd17f7c

I wonder if he knows the definition of ethics?
