Well, I have finally done it. I won the auction I was watching, for a Canon Rebel XS. Basically the set-up I will be putting together is the one listed by Ray (rmpsrpms) in this thread (5th Post on the First Page):

https://goccf.com/t/158182&whichpag...erms=Jansjos

Because I will be shooting only full coin images, and very rarely attribution images, I didn't purchase an objective or M42-RMS Adapter.

I have been able to purchase almost all of the items required for the set-up, I am just missing the Nikon Lens (Which should cost $30-$40 hopefully).

Below is the list of items, and the prices I got them for (Including Shipping).

Canon XS camera, body only: $195
EOS-M42 Adapter: $2.30
M42 focusing helicoid, 17-31mm: $29.35
M42 Extensions (x2) 7/14/28mm: $9.98
M42-M39 Adapter: $1.45
Nikon 75mm EL-Nikkor Lens: (Still Looking)
Tripod: $25.88
IKEA Jansjo LED lights (x2): $27

Total: $290 + $30-$40 for Lens

As the items arrive, I will probably have more questions regarding how I should set everything up.

A Very Big Thank You to Ray (rmpsrpms) and Dave (SsuperDdave)!

You will love this set up!! One question, does your camera come with all the software? Also, you might want to get a AC adaptor as the battery does not last long...

rmc...have you had good luck with the AC adapter on the XS? I bought one but the camera seems to require the battery cover be closed to operate, and you can't close it with the adapter in place, so I just use one battery while charging another and swap when it dies. Is there a trick you found to make it work? ...Ray

That is true...you must have the door closed which isn't a problem (at least for my camera) as there is a notch for the cord in the door. I love the adaptor...never have to mess around with changing batteries

Hope so - there's an XS on the AC adapter right next to me as I type.

Thanks rmc, I will buy one of those!

That Lens you linked was the one I was bidding on. I was at work today, and wasn't able to increase my bid (I forgot to last night).

Would an 80mm work about the same as a 75mm? I can pick up a Nikon 80mm Lens for about $25.

Yes. It's all on the disk labelled "18.1" (I wasn't sure when I first looked at the auction, but Ray confirmed that's the disk).

I was able to find a El-Nikkor 75mm. Slightly over what I thought I would get one for ($60), but it is almost brand new.

Which puts my total for this set-up at $350 exactly.

I prefer the 75mm f4 to the 80mm f5.6. The wider aperture is a benefit, and I find the 75mm to have pretty good color performance. The 80mm has more LongCA. The 80mm is no slouch, but the 75 is better for coins IMO...Ray

rmc, did you have to buy the coupler seperate with that listing? I found this, which comes with the coupler.

Ray, I just did a search on YouTube, about the AC adaptors on Canon cameras and found a helpful video (It's about a different camera, but I assume it's the same concept as on the XS).

Yes I bought them separately...tried to find the package but couldn't. The one you listed is the same seller as where I got mine...very fast shipping. You wont be sorry you bought it.

May I ask what kind of tripod/stand did you go with?

Here is the link to the Tripod

http://www.ebay.com/itm/13096896519....m1439.l2648

Ray had suggested one that has the hand crank, to move the tripod up and down. It will be easier to make fine adjustments.

Just something to keep in mind...I was using 2 jansjo's and seemed to be fighting with the lighting all the time so I added 2 more....couldn't be happier! Cuts lighting adjustment in half at least. I use a simple diffuser that I made and my pictures have never been better.

Thanks rmc, I may have to test that once I get my Jansjo's.
