Can any one tell me what this dark green layer on these large cents are? I have a bunch of coins that are in amazing shape (AU and higher details) but have this green layer on top. I went to a dealer and tried the ms70 cleaner on a really bad coin (just to test out) and not much happened after using 2 q-tips of cleaning. I know you should not clean coins in terms of their value, but I would like to clean some and keep them to myself for having such detail. Any clue what I can do?

Acetone should remove this without "cleaning" so long as the green has not gone hard. Also, whether this will save the coin depends on how long the vedigris has been eating away at the coin. If the underlying copper has been damaged there is nothing to be done.

I had a really bad example of this on a large cent that acetone would not remove. If your coins are AU or higher what did the dealer suggest for cleaning?

The dealer did not really say much. We tried Ms70 cleaner on one coin briefly and although you could see to so of green/black stuff on the tip, the coin had still stayed a shade of green. I'm guessing they have been eaten pretty bad, and there's no turning back? Also, would this stuff keep getting worse or is there a point it has done all tic a do to the coin? Because I have some easily with AU or even MS details, and would sell them as is if people would actually buy them

Sorry for the typos: the q tip had a lot of green stuff on it, but the coin stayed similarly green.*
And: is there a point where the verdigris had done all of its damage and cant do anymore?
