Went to the bank this afternoon and cashed a dinky check for $6 and change. The teller, a person with whom I have become acquainted at the bank, hands me my bills. She gives me my $1 and $5 and I noticed the $1 was a bit dingy. Then I noticed it is from 1977-A series. I know it's not in the best condition, but when's the last time anyone saw one of these in circulation? You don't even see the 1990's series in circulation hardly. I mentioned it to her and she said "Oh, well I saw something cool with a $5 bill earlier if you're interested." She goes back somewhere out of view and comes back up with an envelope. Inside, she shows me a series 2006 $5 star note. She told me it came out of a fresh stack from one of their orders to the Federal Reserve. I tried to tell her she should keep it but she said she just thought it was interesting, but had no real plans to hang on to it or anything. She gave that to me in exchange for my boring, common $5. I have never managed to get a star note for face value, and uncirculated at that! Maybe my luck is turning around?

It's been awhile since I've seen a 1977 A in circulation.

Getting that star note was pretty nice. You've got a pretty nice teller at your bank. (Everybody at my bank is grumpy all the time.)

Interesting factoid on G William Miller, who's signature is on 1977-A notes.

He is the only person to have served both as Federal Reserve chairman and Secretary of the Treasury.

It has been a couple of years since I've gotten one in change.

There are two tellers I usually get when I go to the bank and they save stuff for me when they see it. This one didn't really know a lot about star notes but thought it was interesting enough to put it aside. I asked if she had the rest of the stack so I could buy it. :) And I had no idea about Mr. Miller on that 1977-A, but that's pretty cool to be able to say that.

And with the $5 banknote with a run of 640 000, the luck is with you. Nice finds!
