Nice coin. I would grade it at VF.

Interesting that grade is fairly forgiving considering the scratch on the reverse horse hind quarter. What the coin does have is minimal wear on the obverse and is almost 100% centered. Maybe this will keep the coin from an "F" grade.

What grade would you give this one? I could clean it up a little, but didn't want to mess it up trying to get the red stuff off it. Weight 10.52 grams, Max diameter 27.61 mm.

VF+ A very pleasing coin well centered with full legends. This piece has minor deposits on the reverse. Some minor wear on the high points.

A most excellent piece. I would concur with the VF+. You definitely should not mess with the red 'stuff'. The silvering is quite good and the 'stuff' makes the coin easily determined as the genuine article. A bit of "Stuff" is very hard to fake. Besides ..... we should all look so good after 1700 years !

I wonder if we all agree with the grade that HJB assigned to the coin? I am still really unsure on grading ancients, but I would have said VF for the AR Tetradrachm.

Odessos, Thrace tetradrachm: Hair detail is good on Mithradates, but not on the forehead, or on the body of Zeus, or on some parts only on the reverse lettering, but is OK on other parts.
Because of the variation on the amount of detail, I think that the weak parts of the design both sides, are not struck up properly, and NOT due to wear.
VF+, weak strike in parts.

Sel good observation on the uneven amount of missing detail. I almost sure there was not enough silver to fill the die completely. Notice the subtle out line of eagle. There is very little wear on the highest points of the design (Zeus' hip area and the hair above Mithridates' ear) I think we are all agree on the grade. HJB gives it a VF.

That is a good point, it does look like it was due to the strike and not wear, in that case I would go to VF+ also.
