This 1917 type 1 looks a little off to me, looks like I can see where the chainmail was over the right shoulder. It also looks like it has a nipple on the exposed breast. Am I imagining this or is this an altered coin? Thanks in advance.
IMHO it is the image that's altered to put more detail on the coin than there is and obscure issues. There is smoothing in the fields with the photo editor as well as on the shield (they got a little sloppy on the drape around the shield). I think there is contouring on the body (a la TMZ) and that is why there is additional detail on the chest.
I see it as nothing more than a low quality scan through a 2x2.

You might be able to tool away the chainmail but that doesn't fit this coin because it has a Type 1 reverse. It is also worth noting that the value difference of a D-mint Type 1 vs. Type 2 is negligible so there would be no point in performing such an alteration.

That is indeed part of the design but usually not visible on a circulated coin.
