1900-P-$5-Gold-Grading

What do you grade it? And do the scratches affect the value or is this common for this type of coin at this grade?

I'm not a great gold grader, but I'll give it a shot.

Since I can barely see the luster, and it sure is circulated, I'd call it AU50.

I think the scratches are OK for a gold coin with this amount of wear, but then again, I'm not the one to ask about gold .

AU-50, it might have 55 details but downgraded to 50 due to the scratches, there pretty rough... Most AU $5 coins I've seen were much cleaner, I'd expect to see less for the amount of ware .

As far as value goes, it really depends on the buyer and their opinion on eye appeal... Next to a cleaner coin of the same grade they might pay more for the one with less chatter. And in all honesty some may pass it over due to the scratches. While others couldn't care less. Did you buy it for your collection or to flip?

gotta love gold!! These are one of my favorite reverse designs.

XF45 to AU50. Scratches, especially old ones, have a minor play in grading unless they are very heavy. Newer scratches....like staple scratches.... will have a grading impact.

Still, yours appears to be a nice original coin.

I like it.

XF45.

P.S. This thread is about the exact same coin. I got from the OP (Prethen) in a trade last winter. https://goccf.com/t/140573

^Thanks brad. Do you have any info on the 2oz Christopher Columbus coins? I've looked everywhere but couldn't identify it. Same with the 2oz liberty round.

I like this as a nice original example, showing nothing except what one would expect from slightly-circulated gold. I'm calling it a "happy camper" XF45+ and if I were looking for that specific example for a typeset, this would be the coin.

I remember Prethen's thread; too bad the images have disappeared.

I will go with AU-50. I think there is enough detail for an AU but not quite enough luster to grade higher. The marks don't look too bad considering it is made of gold.

I'm at XF-45. I like the orange glow toning, but I dont see enough luster to make AU imho.

With different lighting for the photo I think some mild luster would show. AU-50

I'm with AU-50, with perhaps below-average luster for the grade. This is a common-date coin and should sell for a bullion-related price. Fair market value at today's gold price should be around $350 (USD).
