I'm not sure if this is normal wear or if it is a printing error. It looks like the words "States of" and the text under are faded, but the rest of the coin looks OK.

Thanks!

That area is frequently found with a weak strike because it is opposite the area of highest relief on the coin- Lincoln's shoulder.

Are we sure it's not a strike through? It looks like grease to me.

I agree with biokemist I have seen alot of these that look exactly the same thats why I agree because if it were grease why would there be so many like this in the same spot maybe the grease can stick around a little bit but you would think it would be squeezed out or stick to the coin some and would be removed after a coulple strikes. I does kind of look like someone could have left a slanted area of grease as they tried to wipe the grease away! Do they even use grease is anyone sure I would think an oil would be better but I guess grease might stick around longer.

One more thought...
if it is like the ones I have seen it has a slanted area from the bottom of the letters up to the top of the letters. I have not really seen alot but I do usually find one or two when I go through a semi small batch of cents! 86543338896547856

These are easier to find than errors. Mass production is more important than perfection .
