Does anybody know what these odd large cent planchet things are? They appear pressed as there are rims, and looks line no confining collar...... My guess is someones fake fantasy perhaps? They do not look like dug coins as the surfaces are too uniform and all coins have exactly the same uniformity with no apparent obverse image.

Fascinating. Think about them contextually - the usual mechanical suspects for such damage didn't exist during these coins' contemporary lifetime, and I can't see someone grinding them down, acid-dipping them or throwing them into a dryer in the Modern age. I'll tell you plainly, if I had the disposable income I'd probably snag these for study. If anything else, whatever happened to them occurred over a century ago, and that has an interest all its' own.

The appearance of this PMD and the coins remaining in a group, suggests to me that these coins were likely prepared to serve some token purpose; a purpose that was never fulfilled. Perhaps, they were intended to be a host for a counterstamp? Coins having less detail remaining, typically due to wear from circulation, tend to better accentuate a counterstamp.

IMHO, interesting study pieces as these are, the asking price is way too high. I'd rather have some stamped ones!

Here's an example of a counterstamped token, hosted by a blank planchet that was comparable in size to that of a large cent:

This is a fine article by one our esteemed CCF members.

There's no telling for what the OP's blanks were intended; perhaps, these toll road tokens ... or another, similar use?

ExoGuy,

Thanks for the reference.

These blanks I posted are not mine. I was just randomly browsing on ebay and came across them and they caught my attention as something different
