Here is a question for the experts. If someone had a first series(large) $500 denomination National Bank Note in a very fine or better condition, what do you think it might bring at auction, in todays market? Please enlighten me. Thank you Edited by rlw0587 12/19/2013 11:10 pm

From what I read $700 to 35,000 depending on the year.

It would bring: A new condo with an ocean front view in an upscale neighborhood along with a new Mercedes.
My guess is somewhere between 500k$ and one million .... and that's in a "down" market!
It would need to be heavily promoted by a reputable auction house to being max money. It definitely would be the centerpiece of an auction that's for sure!
Pictures please? (LOL!)

Rlw ..... If you Google "$500 national bank note" you'll find several hits that talk about the three known 500$ NBN's. Only one is in private hands. Treasury records show there are several hundred 500 and 1000 NBN's still unredeemed so it is not out of the realm that others may still come out of the woodwork. However, most likely most, if not all, of the unredeemed notes are due to poor record keeping at the Treasury.

westernsky, thanks for your time in this matter, greatly appreciated. As one story goes, (it has nothing to do with me) there is a Boston $500 dollar National in the Dakotas,(one said Montana). Truth is stranger than fiction! Then you have Mobile and New Orleans, in the south... Those two notes should be quite rare.

I have seen a standing 7 figure offer for an Alabama 500$ NBN.
They are as rare as hen's teeth and flying pigs.

Big bucks!! I think it would be a seven figure amount at an auction. Nationals are a pricey addiction and a $500 would be downright costly.

Take note, I would personally pay 1.5 million or more for a VF or better example. And if you think I am joking, then please offer and give me the chance to validate my offer.

Nationals, I have taken note! Perhaps you might answer this for me Sir. Of the $500 Nationals that are known, do you know what charters they are drawn on? Thank You.

Love those proof sheets! Nice to see what the 500's essentially looked like. Thx!

Indeed those $500 specimens are stunning. I think it is amazing that any of the issued notes exist at all considering the high face value and people being unable to unwilling to tie up that much money in a piece of paper.

And here's the mother of all Nationals. We've found exactly two of these in the certified proof collection so far. This is the closest anyone will get to seeing an actual $1000 note.
