This is fun! I should have joined years ago!  this should be a split planchet I believe. It weighs 1. 22 gr and a full penny is 2.5 gr. no idea of the actual date but it has to be between 82 and 89. you can see a faint mirror image of her majesty on the blank side. no sign of PMD. no cut marks or tool marks. is there anything else I should look for as a marker? am I right in calling this a split planchet? any idea of value if it is legit?    |

A split planchet indeed. Split prior to the strike, and then struck underneath a regular blank planchet (obverse is the anvil die). Somewhere out there, is the other coin with only the reverse (probably a regular sized planchet)...

 with SPP-Ottawa. It is the only logical explanation that explains all of the features seen here. I have never seen this mode of split planchet before, and I have seen quite a few split planchets. I figure that it may be quite rare. |

I just picked up another split planchet. I now have a reverse split to go with my obverse split planchet. they will look great next to each other. maybe I should glue them together and call it a mule? lol. as stated by SPP, split prior to strike and struck underneath a full planchet. or because this is the reverse this time, was this stuck ABOVE another full planchet? SPP? any thoughts?    |

It's unfortunate that the obverse is a 12 sided penny and the reverse don't match the years or you would have a really cool set. I think the 12 sided only occurred in 1980.

the 12 sided has to be 82-89 due to the portrait. either way it is a cool (half) coin
