Just found a stash of my great grandpa's early 1900 coins. Nothing in great shape but wondering if there should be certain coins I should look out for. From reading others post I did check and I don't have a 1909 S VDB just the regular 1909 VDB. I'm aware that all dimes before 1965 have silver. My grandpa must of hated quarters because he doesn't have a single one. Any help is appreciated. Thank you

Welcome to CCF

Indian Head cents are also great 1908 S and 1909 S in the early 1900s and many many prior to 1879.
For early Lincolns I would look for any prior to 1935.
The big ones are 1914 D, 1922 noD (no observeable mintmark), and 1931 S.

There are many other cents worth a few bucks even in the lower grades. http://www.numismedia.com/fmv/price...icesgd.shtml

Okie,
At the risk of being impolite I am going to ask your age. I am 62 and my Great Aunt, from whom I received many coins, was born in 1900. The age and work of your ancestor matters,
Having said that, yes, there are coins to look for. Using the resources obtained here on the CCF, identify the coin type. Within each series there are certain key dates. Learn those and also semi-key [scarce] coins.
Now, the more difficult task: estimating the grade. Both my Great Aunt and my father handled
the same coins day to day, but the degree of wear was very different. Both the CCF resources
and the members will be of great help.
Lastly, do not rush into anything. It takes a great deal of patience to go through a bunch
of coins.
We are eager to help.

If you have a 1916 d Mercury dime, it is worth big money too. Post your pennies from 1909-1931 with mint marks. Did you have any nickels? Also look for pre 1880 Indian Head cents. Some of those carry a large premium. The 1877 in particular.

Buy yourself a Red Book and go though each coin to see if you have anything. GOOD LUCK

Put aside any lower mintage years and mintmarks. You can find the mintage numbers here.

Thank you for the information. I'm 26 years old to answer the age question. I'm missing most of the dates y'all have mentioned. I'll try to post pictures soon of the folders which will show dates and mint. I'm doing this all on my iPad so pictures may have to wait. The oldest coin so far is 1881 Indian Head cent. I'm trying to post pic see if it works.

YIKES! Get 'em out of that folder!

Folders are often glued together, which can do serious damage to coins.

Welcome okie1987.
I may be an older collector, 70 to be exact, and I agree with ninamason.

Those old folders have the glue etc. I have several whitman penny albums that coroded the coins. Also a Canadian Nickle set that all of the steel chrome plated coins started to rust and these were au to bu coins originally.

Never go cheap on albums, especially if you have some nice quality coins.
