Hey guys, haven't logged on this site forever but I saw these hobo nickels and just had to share. I don't really care for hobo nickels but when I saw these my jaw dropped. Enjoy: http://imgur.com/a/WVdGl

Those are cool and detailed. The train ones were some of my favorite.

The link is to the carvings by Alexey Saburov, an amazingly skilled engraver living in New Jersey. The guy who started the site has pics from most of the modern carvers as well. check them out.
Joe Paonessa America's greatest (left handed) hobo nickel carver.

I liked every one of them.
Much better than those CNC milled Disney ones.

@murrellington: Thank you for posting this. I had heard of "hobo coins", but didn't know what they were. Most fascinating! For anyone who wants to get a little understanding about the background of these, this might be a good place to start: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hobo_nickel

Those coins all look amazing, but I've seen coins on that level sell for a few hundred dollars a piece and that simply makes no sense to me. They aren't genuine hobo nickels in the traditional sense so you are only paying for art. Seeing as how one could purchase an entire (small) carved statue for the price some of these are going for, they are absurdly over-priced, or at least, over-desired.

Holy COW. That is amazing! That guy is good! hesgut -- I agree, it makes no sense that they would sell for that much. BUT, on the other hand, does it really make any less sense than other forms of art? Heck, some paint on a canvas, if applied by the "right" person, can fetch millions! But aside from that, buying a piece like one of these nickels, and you do have a unique piece of art, that will stay with you forever; meanwhile, people plop down that much money to go to a sporting event -- and once you've seen it, it's gone! The whole point of a "collectible" is having something no one else, or at least few others, have; a collectible coin in general is that way -- I'm sure there are Buffalo nickels worth that same few hundred bucks, that have NOT been carved. Obviously, the ones worth that much are "worth it" just because those particular Buffs are "rare." I'd argue they are no more "rare" than any one of those carved nickels... I guess the value of something is, precisely, what someone will pay for it... Steve

Thanks for the info Badger Mint, nice to know who actually made them.
And yeah as much as I would like one, I couldn't see paying a few hundred for one. This guy is very talented though! And I've seen silly paintings sell for millions, so these coins could be seen as a great deal. lol.
