Yes definitely the same coin. I didn't have the color balance set up on the first one and the focus is a bit off on the second one. However, you can see the scratch on the cheek (just) also you can see a slight dark stain going through the "S" in States on both and a little tear in the flip at about 8 oclock. Here are some close up pics of the date taken through a 10x loupe: I can't imagine that anyone would want to fake a 64 CN though with a mint of over 13 million it's hardly a rare or a particularly sought after date. I am thinking that whoever reported it might have got it mixed up with a 64 Bronze with L which are known to be faked.

Date looks fine on the 1864 and the Washington mint mark looks good too. I am not sure about the Peace dollar because that series isn't my expertise. The only concern I would have when you send these in is getting a details grade due to cleaning. I notice parallel hairline scratches on some that make them look cleaned. Personally, I wouldn't send them in but I understand your motivation...let us know how it turns out.

Hi Timspong, I just came over to read up on the forums here and saw your name and thought, I think I just bought something on ebay from a seller with that name. It was a 1916 S Buffalo nickel, I was the only bidder. I'm working on filling in a set of buffalo's and just need a few more of the early branch mint coins to finish it. This one should work nice since most of the tougher coins in my set are lower grades, and the price was right up my alley. Looking forward to getting it and filling another hole, Thanks

Hi Dave, I am actually holding it in my hand as I wrap it up to send you LOL. It always amazes me how small the coin collecting world is. Thanks for your custom and have a great Christmas!

I don't have any trouble seeing that your two sets of the 1864 are the same coin, but if your original image was the auction pic I'd have questioned its' authenticity myself. The date is way off and the color seems funny for Cu-Ni, whatever the cause. Not that your customer had any justification for what he did about it, but I can see his cause for concern.

Actually the auction picture was more like the second one with the color set up properly. Is it just the pic making the date look off or do you think there is something actually wrong with it after looking at the close up? In the hand I can't see anything wrong with the coin at all and I struggle to think of a reason why anyone would want to bother to fake or manipulate a 66 CN in the first place. The only CN 1c which are valued significantly less are a 62 and a 63 so only the last digit would be necessary to change which looks the best digit of them all in this example. However, to go through all that trouble for $50 price difference seems a bit far fetched. Anyhow I am sending it in to get graded to clear my name with ebay and will post the results here for a nice interesting conclusion on the subject. I think that, at least part of, the problem is my inability to take decent photos of 1c's. I find them, by far, the most difficult coin to photograph.

No, I see nothing at all doubtful about the coin in clearer images.

I ended up submitting 5 coins to ANACS. For a minimum of 5 coins they are $15 each. As I had to send the "so called fake" penny anyway I put in everything listed before (except the 1866 penny and the Pan-Pac half) to make up the 5. I am crossing my fingers the 1886 Lib will come back in a G holder as it seemed to be borderline between an AG & G. The Photograde book definitely puts it at a G but it is not so clear cut with the PCGS photograde App.
It was actually quite good fun choosing the coins etc, so as long as I at least break even, I think I'll send more up from time to time and also try the other grading companies.

Just to let you know that the "fake" penny came back in an AU55 holder. So a big thank you to whoever reported it as fake and closed my store down for 24 hours and lost me over $1000 in sales. I think I might keep it and call it my $1000 penny LOL!
